Janine Antoni: My Body is Your Vehicle In brief, Janine Antoni was born in Freeport, Bahamas on January 19th, 1964 before moving to Florida at the age of 13. Upon earning her Bachelor’s Degree from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, she began attending the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1989, Antoni received her Master’s in Fine Arts in Sculpture. After completing her studies, Antoni began working on her contemporary art. In 1992, she created a series simply known as Gnaw. She gnawed on two 600lb slabs of chocolate and lard. After gnawing and chewing, she made 45 heart shaped chocolate packages and 400 tubes of lipstick made from beeswax and …show more content…
Antoni created 14 busts; seven in chocolate and seven in soap. Antoni then went on to create Eureka. Antoni sat in a bathtub of lard and made a cast of the contours her body made. Antoni stated, “I’m really interested in the repetition, the discipline, and what happens to me psychologically when I put my body to that extreme place.” Another installation Antoni did to the extreme, was Slumber in 1994. Antoni slept in a gallery, hooked up to an EEG machine, which printed and weaved her sleep waves onto a long …show more content…
Many of her pieces are deemed as experimental. Ingrown from 1998 features a woman with attached nails. Mom and Dad from 1994 is a photo of her parents gender swapping. Mary from 2013 is fired ceramic in the shape of sections of a pelvis. Antoni’s work has been featured in the Luhring Augustine Gallery, the Saatachi Gallery, the Anthony Meier Exhibition, and among possibly many more. Antoni has done numerous projects and installations aside from those that I have listed. In conclusion, Antoni is a sculptor, photographer, performance artist, installation artist, feminist, and pioneer of contemporary art. She uses her body as means of creating art. Antoni uses a variety of medium, from chocolate to lard to even mascara. The use of her body in art represents and brings up the topic of both femininity and feminism. Antoni’s artist statement would simply be “My body is your vehicle”. This means her body is used to create art for the viewer to interpret and to make sense of. Her body is her form of artistic expression. Antoni resides in New York City with her husband Paul Ramirez Jonas is currently employed as a mentor at Columbia University School of
