What is it that allows success in a marriage? Can the effort of one person hold a marriage together? This is not the case; rather, it takes love and hard work from both parties to produce a coherent relationship. In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, the behaviors of Logan, Jody, and Tea Cake played a huge role in the level of success of each of their marriages to Janie. Janie tried to make each of her marriages work. He was charming and kind, and she quickly fell in love with him. However, as time progressed, Jody began to treat Janie more like a possession than a cherished soulmate. He valued her because she gave a boost to his ego, but he did not truly value the beauty of her character.
