Back in 1970, there was a small conflict between the Coca-Cola company and Grove Press because the book publishing company was being accused of using the slogan “It’s the real thing,” a phrase Coca-Cola had been using for approximately 27 years, as advertisement for one of their books. The issue here was that the beverage corporation thought this would cause some sort of confusion to the public, even though the two products were not related in any way. Several rhetorical strategies are used throughout the two letters between Ira C. In the first letter exchanged by the two companies, we have an executive of the Coca-Cola company, Mr. Herbert, claiming the slogan belong to them and that Grove Press should cease making used of it to advertise the book Diary of a Harlem Schoolteacher by Jim Haskins.…

Janet Chen wrote a letter to the school newspaper as well, but she was complaining about Dave's letter because he was bashing school ads that she thought were necessary to keep the school going. " Commercial advertising generate much needed money. Our school district agreed to put wraparound ads on its lockers and now it gets more than $200,000 a year from the advertising company." Instead of only including her opinion like Kessler, she has provided facts about how their school needs the ads. Throughout her paper, she continues to put in facts about clubs they lost and money they get from the advertising companies.…

Readers also respond to the inclusion of specific ads, especially their design or content, in publications. So, to begin with, consider an issue about which you have a strong opinion or “pet peeve”—something that bothers you or something that you think ought to be changed.
