The documentary, Two American Families, is about two American families (one white and one black) from Milwaukee, the Neumann and the Stanley family, who shared how they lived their lives for two decades. This documentary showed how difficult it was for these families to achieve the American dream, as they were affected by the varying degrees of poverty, unemployment, and poor economy. Watching the documentary, Two American Families, was quite emotional for me. I was able to put myself on these families’ shoes. The documentary showed an example of how a lot of ordinary American families live and face the daily struggles of life.…

Because their funds were so scarce, they had to go to the grocery store every night because they weren’t able to purchase food for the entire week. Night after night, Brenda would find her mother sitting outside on a rickety, old wooden bench, bawling, screaming at her that they weren’t going to make it, that they were just scraping by. Family Theory Assessments and Application of Family Interventions According to the Family Theory, each part of a system is interrelated, dependent on each other, and affects one another (Codina Leik, 2014). Therefore, if one part of the system is damaged or dysfunctional, such as one member of a family, the rest of the system or family is also affected (Codina Leik, 2014). It is extremely important to incorporate this theory into assessments and family interventions in primary care. Both of my preceptors incorporated this system into their assessments and care.…

When Jeanette was only three years old, Rose Mary applauded her for cooking hot dogs. Jeanette and her siblings had to find food on their own when their mom and dad were out of town. When there was not food during the school year, Jeanette had to pick up untouched food from the trash cans just to eat. These types of examples show what Jeanette and her other siblings had to go through at a young age on their own just to survive. “The Glass Menagerie”, “Death of a Salesman”, and “A Raisin in the Sun” all reflect the human experience. The human experience in this case involves American families during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s that are co-dependent on each other throughout the economic and social struggles of their time. The families’ struggles transcend their time periods; people empathize with them now and will continue to do so long into the future. The stories depict experiences that feel very real and that people can relate to in their own lives. Economic hardship and dreams of a better future are common themes in these plays.…

The Story of Pedro Serrano, as told by el Inca, Garcilaso de la Vega, had a deep impact on me. More specifically, the part that was most was the first interaction between Serrano, the main character, and the other unnamed survivor that was introduced halfway through the short story. Serrano had been stranded on the island for three years and had acquired hair all over—so much so, that it was compared by de la Vega to “an animal’s pelt.” The new survivor on the island was still dressed as a normal Spanish sailor, whereas Serrano had seemed to morph into a different person all together—one who was as mentally unstable as he was physically. When these two very different characters met for the first time, they were both shocked.…
