Jane Smith Substance Abuse Case Study

Jane Smith, was referred by the Courts for treatment because of an OWI arrest. Ms. Smith was involved in a hit and run accident of a parked vehicle and denied it was her fault. She failed the sobriety field test and later admitted it was her who was driving her car when she hit the parked vehicle. Ms. Smith enjoys drinking six twelve oz. beers three times a week. She has in the past used marijuana daily up until she was 28 or 29. Ms. Smith also has experimented with cocaine and hallucinogens two or three times while drinking. Her drug of choice is Alcohol. When she first arrived at the agency, she was in denial of her alcohol abuse and did not believe her alcohol use was a problem. However, once we got more into routine and she started listening to some of the things the addictions counselors and I were saying, she started to act out what she was being taught, instead of just agreeing with the people trying to help her. She started showing us what she could accomplish week after week. This was evidenced by her completing her homework and being able to engage in deep conversation about what she has learned or what she still would like to work on. Also, by continuing to participate in AA meetings and being able to change her people, place, and things and could still overcome temptation. Ms. Smith started visiting family more, which this had a significant impact on her recovery. Ms. Smith did however, have a few setbacks with not passing her PBT or drug test. For this, she had to have mandatory twice a week PBT and drug test done for two months. Through all of this, she was very responsive and always answered and returned my calls in a timely manner, and she was not difficult to work with at all. She responded very well to her treatment and succeeded through the rest of her goals. I believe that, as with any addict, she should stay away from her old friends and continue to stick with her new surroundings and not go back to old
