How did Jane Eyre go from angry child to content adult? Jane suffered much. But she also had minute pleasure in her life. These things all molded her into the woman she becomes at the end of the book. God did not bless her with a life of wealth until her later years, but this resulted in her becoming a very humble and polite woman. Mr. Rochester is likely the thing that changed her life most, as she felt a love never felt before. He was the single pleasure that God blessed her with, and they lived happily together in the end. She makes the perfect example of a Buildingsroman, a fully developed character because of her surroundings.

She became indifferent toward the staff and Mr. Brocklehurst for their strict measures and discipline, but when typhus hit Lowood and the resulting death toll caused a school restructuring, she became more tolerant. She became a mature woman and was no longer angry, but yearning for a new life somewhere else after he favorite teacher left. Rochester. Mr. Rochester made her a different person in a sense of her confidence. She was a timid woman before coming to Thornfield, but he crushed her insecurities. Jane said of him later, “St. John’s Love was false. For I had known love like no other, and it came from Edward Rochester.” (Bronte, 433) He made her a strong and independent woman. She also witnessed the death of her aunt, who helped her resolve her feelings of hatred, and as a result, Jane became slightly more caring.
