The most crucial relationship in the autobiography of Jane Eyre is her relationship with Edward Rochester. The 2011 version of Jane Eyre does not allow enough time for the audience to fully grasp the emotional connection between Jane and Mr. Rochester. Along with the time, contributing to their seemingly incredulous relationship is the belittled role of Blanche Ingram. In the 1986 version of Jane Eyre and the book itself utilize Ingram’s role to clearly display Jane’s feelings toward Rochester and also her own self-pride. They do so by introducing Ingram earlier and displaying Jane’s feeling toward her as well. Those feelings being a mix of jealousy, in her love for Mr. Rochester, and also pride in knowing there was no love between them. In the 2011 version Ingram is only used to a small extent to show Jane’s jealousy and also as reason for Jane to portray disbelief in Mr.Rochester’s proposal. Because of this, the audience may be unsuccessful in forming an attachment to the couple. In the 2011 version of Jane Eyre Helen Burns is given the same treatment she receives in the book and the 1986 version; however, Helen Burns does not talk to Jane about Christian principles that inspire Jane farther in her life. The inclusion of this moment would’ve added more character to Helen, rather than being the good, best friend that passed away, she could’ve been the influential best friend and have been a character more enticing to the audience. Another point would be Jane’s entrance in the lives of the Rivers’. In the 2011 version Jane Eyre, Jane does not travel from house to house begging for food nor does she get rejected from the door by Hannah, as she did in the book and the 1986 movie. The exclusion of this point causes the audience to not fully grasp the pain and desperation felt by Jane. This also causes the audience to not fully comprehend the burden Jane feels from St. John’s kindness, thereby disengaging the audience in comparison to the previously stated versions. The newer version of Jane Eyre also omits the brief meeting Jane has with Bertha Mason before she discovers Mr. Rochester’s previous, preexisting marriage. This plot point was included in the two earlier version previously mentioned. By including this point those
