Obierika is telling the truth about the Ibo culture. There Ibo culture is falling apart. When the Christians start to come in and building churches and converting everyone to their religion. Their religion is being destroyed by others interfering with it. o This literary term describes the theme of tribal belief. Igbo are coming to a new religion, something that is different to them. Many people are not believing in their tribes they are converting themselves. Some don’t approve of the change for instance, Okonkwo. He doesn’t want his people to convert over to them. When he finds out that Nwoye has joined them Okonkwo choked and threatened him. He has a strong fear of being known as weak or being labeled as a coward. He wants to show everyone how determined and powerful he is. As Okonkwo realizes that every time he tries to show everyone how strong and his prudes get in the way he fails which leads to him hanging himself. o I like the quote from Achebe because it shows how Okonkwo tried to show no signs of weakness and which led to one of the many events that led to his downfall.

He was trying to prove to everyone that he could be the leader of the clan. When he came out of exile his confidence took over him. o This quote describes the theme of fear. Okonkwo tried so hard not to become just like his father that he did everything to show that he want so weak. Towards the end of the book Okonkwo realizes that his clan is becoming weak and just doesn’t agree with everything that he does. Okonkwo develops anxiety with everything that happens when he leaves exile. For example the betrayal of his people leads some of his anxiety. So, instead of going through anymore disappointment or abiding by the rules of his culture he decides to commit
