Jane Elliott's Persuasive Speech

Improved Essays
Jane Elliott was, by far, the most controversial speaker that I have heard at Texas A&M University-Commerce. On October 4th at the Sam Rayburn Student Center, she fiercely discussed the racism that is woven throughout our American culture, and she started by mentioning that children in America are taught to be racist from the day they are born. She used strong, and sometimes inappropriate language, which bothered me initially, because it can imply lack of professionalism. As her speech continued, I realized that her use of strong language was only helping her more efficiently convey her thoughts. One of her main topics was the importance of voting, and she emphatically endorsed Hillary Clinton for the 2016 presidential race. Jane Elliot is a women who found the courage to fight for racial justice, and hearing speak about the topic was not only informative, but also an honor and a privilege.

She fervently advocated social justice, and her fireball attitude was refreshing and inspirational because she said what she was thinking and did not make it look pretty. Not caring about offending people, Elliott said that if anyone ever says they are not black, they should consider that “the first modern human beings on this earth came from a black woman.” She proceeded to say that the term “biracial” should not pertain to ethnic races, rather, it should only pertain to races of different species. That led to her fascinating idea that “if both of your parents came from planet earth, you are not biracial.” Once I considered her stance regarding individuals who are ethnically biracial, it made perfect sense, because regardless of skin color, all human do indeed belong to the human

Natalie began her speech with some effective hooks, noticeably grabbing the attention of the audience. This was done in a two-step process, in which she first asked the audience “How do you live a good life?” a general question which seemed to attract some audience attention. She then transitioned into her topic by showing very spectacular and indulging images of sweet desserts while describing how delicious they are, effectively using visual rhetoric to grasp the attention of the remainder of the audience and enhance the pathos of her speech.…

Deanna, leggy, beautiful, and daring, came a long way from a rugged childhood and the time of liquor bottles aimed at her mother’s head. So said a Washington Post reporter in 2008, “Councilwoman Deanna Flin is a fresh face and a breath of fresh air in D.C. politics.” In the eyes of her colleagues (boozing old school boys with potty mouths and potbellies), she personified Hillary Clinton, the little engine that would, if she could, overturn the political status quo. “Too big for her britches,” said one, which struck Deanna as funny, but not in the ha-ha-ha way.…

Book Review From #blacklivesmatter to Black Liberation is a novel chronicling the more recent events of discrimination in history, especially pertaining to the Black population. The author, Dr. Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, gives the reader an analysis on why the #blacklivesmatter movement is essential in the fight for Civil Rights, and she gives us a case for a more radical movement as well. Dr. Taylor first introduces us to the concept of institutional and American racism. She begins to critique the post-racial/color-blindness rhetoric of most political agendas and people. Dr. Taylor lists three key concepts as mainly contributing to this phenomenon: implicit institutional racism, the creation of the stereotypical successful Black person, and the election of a Black President.…

In the following week, the brown eyed and blue-eyed children had their roles swapped. Both parties have now experienced what it were like to be the discriminator and the discriminated. During the initial experiment, the brown-eyed students who were slower and withdrawn had performed better while the blue-eyed children were not performing as well.…

For this chapter what I found very interesting was the experiment done by Jane Elliott. While watching her video I found myself becoming frustrated with the way she was treating the blue-eyed people. I am very aware of racial issues that colored people are experiencing in our society today. I am not defending racial discrimination, but I don’t think its fair to say that white people aren’t discriminated against like black people are. Its not fair to judge a whole race of people based on one persons actions.…

In a Democratic society many take freedom for granted, while others believe that they are not given enough freedom. Dave Eggers introduces us to a society that is searching for what they believe to be “total freedom”, while Megan Boler provides readers with examples of media in democracy and how freedom is portrayed in each form. Both sources allow the audience to see that freedom does require a balance of control. A world with total freedom would instead lead to a society with many feeling violated, this is why there needs to be some level of external control exerted on citizens. What needs to be found and determined is that proper balance of freedom, and how to address this balance with citizens of each and every community.…

In conclusion, white and male privilege are still prevalent in our present day society. In order for this to change, we must start making more people aware that these privileges exist. We must also stop viewing racism as an act of discrimination but also as certain groups being privileged over others.
