Communication-related Features
Jane is 43 years old and was born with an incomplete cleft, which is a cleft in the soft palate and uvula. In addition, she has a moderately severe hearing impairment.
Clefts of the lip and palate are the most common congenital deformities (Bansal, Pathak, Bhatia, Gupta, & Gautam, 2012). In school age and throughout adulthood, children with isolated cleft palate have poorer language performance than those with no clefts. (D’Antonio & Scherer, 2008). This is a feature that is common in Jane’s experience, because she has difficulties in pronunciation and differentiation between speech sounds. Hypernasality is when there is an excessive nasal resonance for certain vowels and oral consonants (Naharajan, Savitha, & Subramaniyan, 2009). Hypernasality …show more content…
This is a common way for people to discover a cleft in their child—a child with cleft lip and/or palate will have difficulties latching on to the nipple while feeding (Oram Cardy, 2015). A cleft is an abnormal structural opening that is most likely due to a disruption during the prenatal development (Oram Cardy, 2015). An isolated cleft palate is frequently associated with a syndrome (Oram Cardy, 2015). However, there was no known family history of cleft palate or reported syndrome for this individual. Cleft palate is likely a multifactorial causation of genetic and environmental factors (Oram Cardy, 2015). However, Jane recalls her mother saying that she had a fairly normal healthy pregnancy and had Jane before age 30—hence increase in parental age or presence of teratogens in the utero is unlikely to be risk factors in this case (Oram Cardy,
