Relationships, and love in general can be very complicated and difficult. There are often many trials and obstacles to overcome, whether it be pride, other people’s opinions, or even family members, believe it or not. Many people base their feelings for others upon things the people around them have said, and have led them to believe. This is a world where people rarely decide things for themselves. It is found that many people marry for money, and/or a higher social ranking, instead of for love. Therefore, people expect nothing more or less, but what they have yet to discover is that this is not the case for everyone. Elizabeth Bennet, however, did not care what others thought. She did not believe marriage was the absolute only way to be happy, because she was a very independent person. Yet, in the same sense, she wanted to marry for love, not for fortune, and she wanted her relationship to be genuine, unlike the many others around her. Jane and Bingley’s love however serves as a reminder that true love may not be hindered by pride or prejudice. However both Jane and Bingley have such similar qualities that they can almost be described together, this points to the fact that although they love each other so dearly, as all the way through the novel they have been portrayed as a potential couple, such love can be a bit dry and uneventful. Also Austen seems to give a more detailed account of Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s love than of Jane and Bingley’s relationship, as if to say that Elizabeth’s relationship with Mr Darcy is a lot closer to reality and far more entertaining. Mr. Darcy and His Harsh Judgments “[His] friend Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien, and the report which was in general circulation within five minutes after his entrance, of his having ten thousand a year.[(p.14)] ” This was the first impression made of Mr. Darcy in the novel, Pride and Prejudice. This would be one of the first opinions made about his character and others of the book but not the last made in the book either by him or by the other members of the party. One of Austen’s main themes is not passing judgment on others; Darcy and his actions encapsulate that idea greatly within his treatment and thoughts of Elizabeth and her family. Before properly knowing each other, Elizabeth is stubborn and judgmental when she meets new people, while Mr. Darcy is proud and egocentric when he looks down on people of a lower class than him. As Elizabeth and Darcy become more involved with each other, they identify one another’s shortcomings and learn how to change themselves. As they discuss their past relations, Elizabeth says that she has “long been most heartily ashamed” of her words and actions that had been sprung from her prejudice, while Darcy tells her that she had “taught [him] a lesson…most advantageous”, as through her, he “was properly humbled” (Austen, 240-241). While they both possess numerous flaws, Elizabeth and Darcy were capable of acknowledging their damaging pride and prejudice as they interacted with each other. Through their story, Austen indicates that it is possible for people to overcome their imperfections as they teach each other new morals.…

The Evolution of Elizabeth Elizabeth Bennet There is a complex and intricate weaving of gender, classism, and societal ideology of the institution of marriage in Elizabeth Bennet’s era of time was intricately built upon the foundations of patriarchy, social class restrictions, and female subjugation. All of these finely defined constructs formed a cohesive bond within this interestingly and distinct tapestry within the framework of patriarchal dominance, female submission, and playing the game strategically designed to keep the woman in a place of a damsel in possible distress. A woman’s role in life was to be an ideal candidate for a man with wealth, social class entitlements, and her willingness…

Most of Elizabeth’s actions are seen as erratic, foolish, and selfish by the other characters of the novel, namely, her mother. Elizabeth declines Mr. Collin’s marriage proposal, preferring to secure her own personal happiness rather than securing her and her family’s financial standing. She makes her personal beliefs clear to Lady Catherine De Bourgh later in the novel by saying, “I am only resolved to act in that manner, which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you, or to any person so wholly unconnected to me” (230). Elizabeth believes that her place in society is dictated by herself, and although she marries Darcy, it is for love and her own values rather than for financial reasons or because of societal standards.…
