Jane Atwell's Great Reflection

Decent Essays
Great reflection Stephanie! It was great to see how Atwell introduced her mini lessons in her writing workshops. I believe that both chapters went hand in hand in ways that Atwell gave examples of her guidance to students one on one. Her teaching seems to individualize each student so that they learn at their own pace and work on each struggle independently with the guidance of their teacher.

At the end of every chapter in the novel Page After Page, by Heather Sellers, there are little exercises/practices sets up that the reader can do. These exercises are a way for the author, make the reader to interact with the book, and effectively learn how to become a better writer. The way that they are set up is short, simple and sweet; and does not require extra brainpower. For example, at the end of chapter fourteen Sellers asks the reader to just sit at the computer and write for fifteen minutes, ignoring every grammar and spelling rule.…

The article “South L.A. student finds a different world at Cal” written by Kurt Streeter was a true story of Kashawn Campbell, who was struggling in his first English writing class at the University of California, Berkeley (“UC Berkeley”), one of the best public universities in the US. Campbell was raised in one of the roughest neighborhoods in South Los Angeles, Jefferson, where composed of Latinos and blacks exclusively. The main topics of chapters one through 4 in the book Democrats, Republicans and the Politics of Women are that gender plays a large part in politics and how people make partisan decisions. The chapters also cover how the two political parties differ in their stances on different gender issues. I really liked Sanbonmatsu’s differentiation between gender equality and role change. I found this to be an interesting separation that helped me understand and better categorize my already existing knowledge of how gender politics and opinions about gender equality worked. I really enjoyed most of the findings of the first four chapters…

I walked through Whiterun chatting to some of the locals who I now knew well enough to make casual conversation with, I was interested to note that Mikael, Carlotta and Ysolda now all seem to be firm friends. When they saw me Mikael moved over to my side and admitted the girls had caught him watching, and were so turned on by it, they now let him watch, as being watched aroused them all the more, and they want me to know I’m welcome to join them any time I wish. Nazeem made some comment about me being a low class slut, so I punched him in the face, everyone nearby stopped to laugh; I guess it’s true that nobody likes Nazeem. Maybe I should have split my journal up into chapters like my predecessors, but it’s a little late now, so I’m afraid you will have to make do with what you get.…

However, John decided to structure his class differently. He was on the children level so that the students can see that he was motivated about the lesson just like them. For me, I believe that John was doing the right thing by modeling the process. Students that are that young are not aware of how the writing process works.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

I am very excited for the course and learning everything that comes along with it. I am planning on working in the healthcare field, so I am mainly looking forward to learning how to write more coherently and effectively. Once, I have a better understanding of those skills, they will benefit me in the long run. For example, I am going to be responsible to provide the correct information to the doctors I will be working with. They need to be informed on their patients and their situations and of course, these things have to be done without error.…

I agree with all of Burroway’s ideas, but that is partly because I had already learned most of them from past classes. I already knew the three main types of dialogue (summary, indirect, and direct) and I’ve always thought they were helpful for me. In fact, one of my assignments required me to write a scene containing nothing but dialogue, and this scene also had to include all three types. That assignment was great practice for writing dialogue that served multiple purposes, and I’m happy to share my submission for it if you would like me to.…

My History As A Writer Throughout my lifetime I have come to love and absolutely hate writing. The reasoning of the assignment or topic has a lot to do with my affinity and disgust. As an art form I recently come to love writing down my thoughts, ideas, opinions and stories.…
