What makes plants grow? How do plants get energy ? Where do plants get their mass? Well Jan Baptist Van Helmont, Joseph Priestley, and Jan Ingenhousz are great scientist who did experiments about photosynthesis to have a better understanding about it. As you read this you will learn how each one came about there experiment and how they learned from it.

Jan Baptist Van Helmont experiment was the willow tree. He wanted to see if plants obtained their mass for the soil. He measured the tree and the dry soil. He measured the growth of plant for five years and only used rainfall water. After five years he weighed the plant and it had increased in mass by over 12 stone [BBC1]. He then learned that plants do need soil but the plants don't feed off of it. We don't know if something could have changed though. The amount of sunlight could have changed the experiment.

He placed a mint plant in a jar with a burning candle under it to see if the plant does need oxygen. The mint did not die and had produced the substance required for the burning. He then learned plants do not need oxygen like we do. One of the flaws in the experiment could have been the size of the plant. The mouse and plant experiment he placed a mouse and and burning candle in a jar and the mouse died. He put a plant in the jar with it too and the mouse did not die. There for plants produce oxygen

The purpose of this lab is to examine cross sections from the leaves of C3 and C4 plants and to determine the morphological differences between them while relating those differences to their metabolism. In C3 plants the carbon dioxide is first incorporated into a 3-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place throughout the mesophyll cells. In comparison C4 plants, the CO2 is first incorporated into a 4-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place within the inner cells.…

The most impactful books are those that bring world inside of them to life in vivid detail. In Hope Jahren’s “Lab Girl,” the world brought to life is our own. However, rather than conveying a human-centric story, Jahren focuses on an often-forgotten character: plants. Jahren is a geochemist and geobiologist, and “Lab Girl” is a cross between a memoir and a textbook explaining the intricacies of plant life. The most memorable excerpts are those where plants are personified, from the stories ingrained in wood to the miracles of the resurrection plant.…

Authors David K. Dickinson and Patton O. Tabors the authors did not discuss phonemic awareness or how well students knew the alphabet; instead choosing to discuss the importance of developing oral language in early childhood. The authors believed that exposure to rich vocabularies in home and at school (or childcare), the child has a greater command of reading comprehension in later academic settings. Thus, the authors suggest three tenets of greater oral language skills: a varied vocabulary, extended discourse, and cognitive and linguistically stimulating environments. A varied vocabulary will come with parents and educators taking the time to hear the students and offer synonyms as well as discussions on definition and other uses for the…

Science Fair Research Paper Plants are one of the most diverse and important organisms that live on this planet. They provide us with energy, clean air to breathe, and sometimes even valuable, life-saving medicine. It seems fit, then, that we should know more about these incredible life forms and how we can grow them in our own backyards. To fully understand the being of the plant, we must first look in the micro world of the plant cell. There are three distinct parts of the plant with different cell shapes and types: root, stem, and leaf cells.…

During this time, many doctors were trying to cure a disease call pernicious anemia. It is a disease that is caused by a deficiency. People with this disease have unnaturally yellow skin because they don’t produce enough red blood cells, prematurely gray hair, walk unsteadily, are short of breath, endure chronically swollen tongues, and suffer from numbness in their hands and feet. The new wave of research began after World War I, and doctors now took advantage of scientific method and new medical technologies. Doctors examined blood samples of anemic patients and found that they had low amounts of red blood cells.…

Photosynthesis is a plant’s mechanism of converting sunlight and CO2 into energy in the form of organic material (Hohmann-Marriott and Blankenship 2011). Plant respiration is the process of using energy and oxygen to produce CO2 (Gonzalez-Meler et al. 2004). Almost all plants reproduce and respire, therefore it is important to know what factors could affect the rate of photosynthesis and respiration to better understand how plants function. Some research has shown that elevated CO2 concentrations may determine plant productivity by affecting plant physiological processes, and ecosystem structure and functions such as photosynthesis ( Xu et al. 1987).…
