Jamet And Jamette: Underworld Of Prostitutes And Gamblers

Decent Essays
I did not know what a Jamet and Jamette was until reading this article and also think that the author did a great job defining it. I would have never guessed that a Jamet/Jamette was "the males and females that are beneath the decent society, that they are in the underworld of prostitutes and gamblers.” Thanks for sharing the other article. I found it very interesting as well.

Sutton’s files on the numbers game and the racket that controlled it are even more extensive than they are for many of the casinos. The files are probably more extensive because policy was so widely played. One could place bets for very small amounts and therefore even those who didn’t have the funds to gamble at casinos could play policy. Because so many people played, the profits for those who controlled the racket were astronomical. In his testimony to the Kefauver Committee Sutton says that it was the old musclemen of the Syndicate that moved in to take control of it when it introduced.…

Since women were excluded from the power of the gang, several turned to prostitution as a means to make money. Venkatesh makes reference to two categories of prostitutes, “hypes” and “regulars” (Venkatesh, 2008). Hypes were the women that turned to prostitution as a means of getting drugs, and regulars were known as the women who usually turned to prostitution as a means to feed their children. Generally, since women were so ostracized from the power of the gang, with the exception of figures like Ms. Bailey, they were often…

The Progressives were led by religious leaders such as Charles Parkhurst, a Protestant Reverend who urged for more “protest” from the Protestants. The Progressive Era united various anti-vice crusaders such as the Anti-Cigarette League, the American Purity Alliance, and the Anti-Saloon League. These groups were already united on many issues such as labor rights, women’s rights, minimum wage laws, etc. Thus, in 1900, a reform group known as the “New York Committee of Fifteen” conducted undercover vice investigations and released their first report with the title “The Social Evil.” A similar group with ties to the New York Anti-Saloon League, known as the “Committee of Fourteen,” did a comparable investigation of prostitution three years later.…

Born Into Brothels Reflection This documentary about the red light district really opened my eyes, and helped me learn about the hardships some kids were facing in parts of our world that I knew very little about. I noticed three main things about the lifestyle and personalities of the children. First, they had nothing: no love, no care, and no one to support them. Even so, they seemed full of joy, never complained, and persisted on with life. After meeting Zana, their lives had changed so much, and they grew very close together as a group, taking nothing for granted.…

Prostitution has been an intriguing criminal offense that has been frowned upon since 1910 when the Mann Act was put into place which prohibited transporting prostitutes across state lines. Because it is up to the states to deem prostitution illegal, Nevada has allowed ten of its counties to permit prostitution while the rest of the country has made it a criminal act. Although it has been criminalized within the last 100 years, women selling their services has been around since the beginning of civilization beginning in 2400 BCE with the ancient Sumer’s. It is estimated that there are 70,000 prostitutes in the US currently and that number is not going down (Brewer et al. 2000). During the Progressive Era, many states decided that it was immoral,…

In the same article, Kimberly states, “One of the most obvious necessities, and a struggle encountered by victim service providers across the country, is finding appropriate, safe housing for victims, because simply too few protective shelters exist to fully meet the needs of this population” (184). In addition to the lack of shelters as Kimberly says, there are actually few safe shelters. It is really difficult to secure underage prostitution victims because pimps have all the information about them. The victims can’t even go back to their own family because it is not safe for them.…

Although I am embarrassed to tell this story, for it screams massive class and racial privilege, I guess it will be another step in the acceptance of my innate privilege and social status. A few weeks ago, I had the chance to hang out with a high school buddy of mine, whom I had not seen in a while. He texted me asking if I was interesting in making a trip to the L’auberge Casino, for his girlfriend had just recently turned twenty-one and was interested in trying out her new legal freedom. I had not been to the casino since my twenty-first birthday, about ten months ago, so I decided that playing with the slot machines would not hurt. As the time to leave came, I hopped in my car, left my house, located in a subdivision on Staring Lane,…

In the movie, Born into Brothels, the film mostly includes the perceptions and ideas of the filmmakers. It was obvious that the filmmakers disapproved of the children being forced into prostitution, which is why they mostly interviewed children throughout the documentary. Which is why they never interviewed the prostitutes or the parents of the children. Even though the movie was based on the children, insight from the prostitutes and parents would have given more insight to the audience. There are many pros and cons to the fact that the only the children were being interviewed.…
