Jamestown was a colony within the state of Virginia, and was founded in the year 1607 by King James I. He began this discovery first with a joint-stock company that was named the Virginia Company. This company consisted of investors that were hoping to find gold and silver in America and gain profit from it. Before sending these investors on their way, he made sure they also took with them the Christian faith that he very much abided by. He believed the Indians would benefit greatly from this faith because he felt they were living in “darkness”. It was not until John Smith came along that they finally had someone on their side to help them thrive at a much more bearable rate. John Smith had military-like discipline and instilled it into the colonists that arrived with John Smith along with the survivors of Chief Powhatan. He knew that was the only way to persevere through the hardships Jamestown was facing. It was because of his ability to communicate effectively amongst the colonists, maintain Jamestown, and come to understandings with the Indians that he became the foreseer of Jamestown. The colony was slowly, but surely on the rise to stability, and the settlers finally happened upon new ways to attain financial gain; selling land. They knew they needed to increase the colony’s population to achieve that goal, though. What they did not contemplate was how population increase could lead to detrimental effects once again.
