In the year 1607 the king of England, James I sent a group of 110 setters to the Americas. These settlers are trying to begin a settlement in America. Unfortunately by 1611 most of them had died due to quality of water, lack of workers, and death from disease. To begin with, one of the causes of death was the quality of the water. The water in the settlement of Jamestown has been described as “brackish”, which is a mixture of saltwater and freshwater.The water was brackish, because the tide mixed with the fresh water. People would also dump their waste into the rivers and creeks. Because of this people would contract disease from drinking the brackish, dirty water. Out of the 110 people that came to Jamestown in only 28 of them were workers. Another 28 of them were people who didn’t have any occupation, which means they didn’t contribute to the settlement at all. There were also 47 gentlemen, who were people that were wealthy, and didn’t want to do any work. This meant that they didn’t have many people to do the essential things for survival, such as building, collecting water, and growing food. Some of those problems like growing food could’ve been resolved if they had broughten some women, but they brought 0 females. Lastly, the colonists in Jamestown died of disease. This was the main cause of death in Jamestown. In August of 1607 half of the people were killed from disease The way that the colonist got disease was from drinking contaminated water. Water would get contaminated from people dumping their waste in it. The rivers weren’t flowing so the waste would linger, and this would ultimately contaminate the water.
