Jamestown is oftenly referred to as the first permanent English settlement in the New World in 1607. Although it was the first permanent settlement, it had numerous problems which almost ended the colony. The colonists of early Jamestown died because of the poor relations with the natives, the diseases, and starvation.
To begin, the colonists were unable to survive because the native relations did not exist. The graph on document B shows the average rainfall of the region, and there appears to be a drought at the beginning of the colony’s existence. This lack of fresh water may of made the colonists hesitant to trade with the natives due to them not having enough resources in general, because the colonists could not farm or even survive with the little amount of resources that the colony had. Also, Francis West and his men went on a trading trip to the nearby indians to trade, however instead of trading, the men killed the two of the indians and stole their grains (Doc D). These actions by West and his men caused the natives to be more hostile towards the other colonists and would not trade with them in the future. Furthermore, there were 7 colonists casualties due to indians attacks in the first couple of years at Jamestown, 1607 and 1608 (Doc E). The colonists’ waste festered in the stagnant water of the James River (Doc A). This waste caused the water to have bacteria which got the colonists sick when it was drank. Additionally, the colonists got malaria due to the abundances of mosquitoes on the island, because of the climate was like a swamp (AP Text). The malaria disease that that the mosquitoes carried killed many colonist every summer.
