Roosevelt: The Lion and The Fox
It is often said that Franklin D. Roosevelt was not as great a President as his cousin Theodore Roosevelt, but leading the United States during the Great Depression, he had to be as strong as a lion and as clever as a fox. James McGregor Burns does an amazing job at describing Franklin’s life as a young boy to the day he was re-elected for the third time to be the president of the United States. Mr. Burns was a prize winning author that specialized in presidential biography that written a little over two dozen other books than this one. The more interesting parts of the book, if you are already familiar with Roosevelt, would be the first part, out of the five, mainly because it goes into franklin 's childhood which a majority of people wouldn 't know much of. For instance the first two chapters talk about Roosevelt growing up as an only child, who loved his parents dearly, where he got his education and also his early years as a politician. First his family and Roosevelt were very close and his mother cherished having Roosevelt around. He spent a majority of time with his father who took Roosevelt everywhere like fishing or horse riding. He would always write so lovingly to his parents often writing to them saying things like “ I send you a kiss your loving son Franklin.” Things like that showed how much he carried about his parents. He was raised in a wealthy family so he did not have any worries as about money problems but this did not make him look down on the less fortunate. The next chapter of his life is probably one of the more important parts mainly because the school he went to really help him establish his political views the he carried throughout his life. If it was up to Roosevelt’s mother, Sara, he would have had his education done all at his house near her but unfortunately he went to a all boy school in Gorton. The way Gorton influenced Roosevelt was by teaching him how to be a leader and the teachers is Gorton actually urges the students to get into politics. The reason for this was that they wanted their students to go out and do something for our land. After his four years in Gorton he he then went to Cambridge to attend Harvard to become a law man. While at Harvard he got to experience more of the world because unlike Gorton it is not so isolated. At Harvard he also got into student politics and was the chief editor
