James Naismith was born on November 6th 1861. He was the eldest of three children family. Both of his parents died of the typhoid fever, and was an orphan at the age of 10. They all went to live with their maternal grandmother who also died 2 years later. An uncle later took care of the children.
Naismiths physical strength was much better than his academic skills. He dropped out of his high school after 2 years. He later returned to finish.
He went to Mcaill University in Montreal. He became an excellent student. He was very involved in sports and graduated top 10 in his class. He became an excellent Theological student. His proffesers did not like the fact that that he participated in sports. Naismith believed you could do both.

He approached the staff because he wanted to teach sprituality with athletics to young atheletes, he was told about a program in Massachusetts.
Naismith went to Massachussetts after his second year he was in charge of the indoor physical education program. His students were honestly troubled youth. The kids were bored, and Naismith was asked to find a way to keep the kids interested.
To create a new sport he looked at outdoor sports like soccer, he tried to interpret them to an indoor sport. Naismith remembered a sport he played as a kid called duck on the rock. This involved throwing balls into empty baskets. He realized he could put the baskets at each end of the floor thus allowing his new game to take form. This was the beginining of the game of basketball. In December of 1981 the very first game of basketball was played. Naishmith never wanted to draw attention to himself. His students thought they should name the game Naismith-ball. Naismith felt the name basket-ball would be much better
