In his second year of college, James’ instructor Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick challenged the physical education class to come up with an idea for a sport that could be played indoors, in the winter, and with artificial light. There was a faculty meeting where the discussion was about creating a new sport because the young men were bored with what they had been playing. James Naismith was attending the meeting. He spoke up and said that the problem “was not the men, but the system that we are using”. Dr. Gulick instantly put James in charge of coming up with something more interesting for the class. The game was played at Naismith’s school, the School of Christian Workers. The gym was really small. Before the game, Naismith posted the 13 Rules of Basketball to the gym bulletin board. When the players arrived, he taught them the rules and how to play the game. The 18 original basketball players names were: Team 1 - John J. Thompson, Eugene S. Libby, T. Duncan Patton, Frank Mahan, Finlay G. MacDonald, William H. Davis, Lyman Archibald, Edwin P. Ruggles, and William R. Chase; Team 2 - George Weller, Wilbert Carey, Ernest Hildner, Raymond Kaighn, Genzabaro Ishikawa, Benjamin S. French, Franklin Barnes, George Day and Henry Gelan. Team 1 won the game with a score of 1 - 0. William Chase was the only player to score a goal, which made him the first scorer in basketball history. (History
