Basketball is a very popular sport that many people all over the world love to watch, or love to play. Some of the places basketball is played in include America, China, Europe, Australia, India, and Japan (Ponti). Considering the inventor only had fourteen days to create an indoor activity, he created an amazing sport played worldwide! Not many people could do what James Naismith did. Now people have a way to stay fit, or to have fun indoors. The inventor of basketball (James Naismith) was a Physical Education teacher at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts (Gels). Luther Halsey Gulick had asked Dr. Naismith to create an indoor activity that could be played during winter, in two weeks. Dr. Naismith was stumped, he started researching and learning the rules to other sports just to get an idea of what he was going to do (Gels). He then thought of a game where the player had to through the ball at an arched position into a basket. Once he had made the rules to the game he introduced it to Gulick. Although this sport was a hit, Dr. Naismith never got the game pattened, and he never made any money off of it (McCuaig). Basketball has given people an opportunity to stay fit during winter. It also was a good way to have fun, and some considered watching the sport entertaining. When Naismith was trying to create an indoor sport he had started to research other sports to get an idea for his own. He saw the soccer ball and made a ball based on that (the basketball), and he saw that games like soccer, hockey, and lacrosse had a goal so he branched off of that and created the basketball hoop (Gels). When you look at most sports you automatically think of outdoors and of a warmer season. Basketball isn’t one of those sports. You can play basketball indoors or outdoors during any season of the
