“The best form of government is that which is most likely to prevent the greatest sum of evil.” States James Monroe during his presidency. This quote conveys how strong James Monroe is during the First Seminole War in 1817. It was a battle over Florida involving the Seminole Indians, Great Britain, Spain, and the United States. Throughout every battle, James Monroe inspired his citizens and army. James Monroe was an excellent man, but he had a background just like every other person. He was born April 28, 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father was an immigrant from scotland and his mother was born in Virginia just like James. His mother would tutor him at home until he attended Campbelltown Academy from 1769 to 1774. He was an excellent …show more content…

Three years later Thomas Jefferson asked Monroe to come back to France to negotiate the ownership of the Louisiana territory. Robert Livingston and Monroe bought the land for 15 million to double the size of the US. Monroe then became the minister of Great Britain where he strengthened the bond between them and America. Most citizens didn’t think of him as outstanding, but they said he was honest, patient, and trustworthy. Surprisingly, no one said he was intelligent even though he got excellent grades in school and got into college. After James Monroe’s presidency, he retired to Virginia, his home state, where he helped make a new state constitution. In 1830, his wife died, so he moved in with his daughter in New York City. He died on July 4th, 1831 at age 73, exactly five years after his fellow presidents, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died. James Monroe had a pretty big impact on America. He fought in the revolution, he was very civically involved, he really believed in peace and freedom the country, and he created the “Monroe Doctrine.” In my opinion Monroe was a decent president. He may not have been as good as Obama, but he wasn’t faced with very difficult problems. Overall, James Monroe did a satisfactory job as president, worked very hard, and earned the respect of the American

When taking on the role of presidency on 1801 Jefferson was faced with a task larger than many other Presidents would have to overcome. “His party, ignoring the natural forces which tied the States together even against their wills, insisted that the legal basis of the bond was in the power of any State to withdraw at will”(Under Napoleon I. 1904, pg 7). This lessened America’s apparent standing to other nations due to the signs of weakness and ironic lack of union. Jefferson saw this and was hard pressed to consul the American wrought ideals of democracy and nationality (Under Napoleon I 1904, pg 7). A strong step in that reconciliation was the purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803.…

The “Era of Good Feelings” label put on the time period after the War of 1812 represents a political anomaly in American history—the practically unopposed election of Monroe—but not a social or political trend. While Monroe’s overwhelming success in election points towards unity of mind, general trends and opinions of the time run contrary to this idea, and the following tumult soon ran the country into its Civil War, attesting to the lack of unity that was already brewing during the so-called “Era of Good Feelings.” Although the election of 1820 seems to speak of one mind across America, there is much evidence to disprove this completely. On Monroe’s election, he received an overwhelming majority of electoral votes, with only one going to…

The fifth president of the United States, James Monroe, is most well known for his foreign policy: “The Monroe Doctrine”. The doctrine sent a clear message to the eastern world, not to colonize the Americas, and also further established the United States as its own, independent country. Although Monroe is well known for it, the history books of today leave out information, concerning Monroe’s rise to political stature and his affiliations among other american leaders. James Monroe’s father and mother, Spence and Eliza, lived in Westmoreland, Virginia, just off the right bank of the Potomac River. Both being aristocratic, the two owned a hefty amount of land.…

By 1811 though, the country had been divided and on the verge of all out war.…
