With his introduction to politics Monroe was made minister to France in 1794, by George Washing, but with the controversial Jay’s Treaty that hoped to avert war with Great Britain, Monroe was released as minister in 1796. Following this political position Monroe was then the Governor of Virginia in 1799. Throughout Monroe’s life he held many political parties, and was mostly successful in each position. With Monroe’s past interactions with France, Thomas Jefferson requested that Monroe go to France and negotiate the purchasing the port of New Orleans. While there the concept of purchasing the Louisiana territory was brought up for $15 million dollars from Napoleon Bonaparte. This purchase later occurred which doubled the size of the United States in 1803. Monroe was aware that the U.S was gaining dominance and wanted the world to respect the U.S. In the Doctrine Monroe declared that European colonization halt and that any act in the American continents would be taken as an act of aggression. This idea was proposed at the seventh annual State of The Union Address to congress. The Monroe Doctrine would stand for decades with only slight variations. This Doctrine was so impactful that even far into the future during the Cold War this ideology was applied to the U.S. during the Cuban Revolution.
