James Martin Lafferty was born on July 25,1985. His parents are Jeff and Angie Lafferty. James’ little brother, Stuart Lafferty, followed in his footsteps and became an actor later in life. At the age of six, James’ mother convinced him and his brother, Stuart, to pick acting up as a hobby. Lafferty then fell in love with acting and eventually turned it into a career and made it a part of his everyday life.
His first acting opportunity was in 1995 as the main character in his school play. Not to long after the play, he managed to be in the short lived television series, Emeril, which allowed him to become noticed by a lot of people. Two years after Emeril he made a small-screen acting debut as a voice over in the film Annabelle’s Wish. Following the start of his career he had made guest appearances on television series such as Once and Again, Get Real, and Boston Public.
Along with acting, James was very talented when it came to basketball. He attended Hemet High school and played on the basketball team. According to his coach, he could tell that James had a strong passion for the game. James played in many of the matches during the season. To end his high school career, James won the MVP award for his team.

He then moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, to take the main role as Nathan Scott, on CW’s television series, One Tree Hill. The first episode of One Tree Hill came out in 2003. James was a part of the cast up until May 2011 when CW decided to renew the series for a ninth and final season. For the ninth season he chose to return on a recurring basis rather than the full time role. Throughout the middle of the series he directed four of the episodes that were aired. The success of the series caused James to receive four Teen Choice Award nominations throughout his whole time being the main role in One Tree
