Sitting down at the computer, a thing every human does these days, is becoming just as addicting as smoking with the exception of not inhaling a deadly drug. This activity is affecting those who sit at the computer for hours, as they unknowingly are increasing their chances of death one click at a time. However, this doesn’t only occur from sitting behind a computer screen. It can also arise from other everyday activities such as driving, eating meals or even just doing your day to day job at work.

Some consequences that people will experience from the addicting action can include the risk of developing: obesity, type 2 diabetes and depression to name a few. James A. Levine found that people who sat down in front of a screen for a longer amount of time “…had nearly 50 percent increased risk of death from any cause [, and] about a 125 percent increased risk of events associated with cardiovascular disease, such as chest pain (angina) or heart attack” . This could also affect you socially as well as physically. It can affect relationships between family and friends, and could even affect events you attend to.

Some solutions could be as minor as standing up while eating. While the larger problem solver could be investing in a desk that you can stand up at while doing work. Making short breaks to stand while watching television “is another popular tip” , even if it’s just during the commercials. Or another commonly used solution is to put on a timer every hour to walk around, just to get some movement. There is always a way to do the same thing standing up as well as preventing a short
