To begin with, Eveline was already engaged to her lover, Frank, and he wanted to take her away to a new home that he already had waiting for the two of them in a distant place. In fact, Frank already had their ship tickets to board the night boat to Buenos Ayres. Also, Eveline would have a different kind of life if she had decided to leave with Frank. As an illustration, Frank seemed like a very nice guy and he would have given her the treatment she truly deserved, that of a lady. Lastly, Frank was a very experienced man and knew a lot about the world that he could have taught Eveline. For example, he had all kinds of stories about the places he had been and things he had experienced on all his journeys which gave him knowledge of the world. Eveline never focused on the opportunities at hand, and this probably guided her decision to stay home.
Eveline made the choice to stay, and she now has to endure the wrath of her father and do things around the house that she should not have to do. She also has to go through her life knowing she could have a totally different life free of mistreatment and with Frank, which would be so much better.
