Joyce had a passion for learning, his interest was always into the act of literature (writing to be specific). Being eager to learn, he self-taught himself foreign languages, he knew up to 17 languages but did not know English at that time when he was single. Upon the received of his bachelor degree, James moved to Paris to try another career (Medicine) after a short while, he got the news that his mom had passed. He quickly travel back home for the funeral and he later met his soul mate who was working at a hospital. She knew English very well but James didn’t. Her name was Nora Barnacle, she taught him English and since he was a fast learner, he learn it so well and that was added to his languages that he knew. James knew exactly what he wanted in his life and career, because of that he issue his first primary book after months of preparing it to be expose to readers. The book drew a lot of attention from the audience. Before Ulysses ever came out, people were having a strong debate about the novel. It was even banned for years in France. After the book was banned, the Post Office took parts of the book and released James Joyce’s work. This led to a penalty that they had to encounter. However, American and British readers dealt with the bootlegged version of the novel. New York Customs Agents seized copies of the book that was sent to Random House. In 1934, Judge John M. Woolsey agreed that Ulysses was not pornographic. Readers were finally able to read the book. Joyce realize that his days of being a writer were suddenly coming to an end. Joyce started to feel sick. He suffered from ocular illnesses, he undergoes surgeries, and being near blind for years. Despite all the circumstances Joyce had encounter within his life time, in 1939 he published his last novel, Finnegan’s Wake.
