The James J. Hill House, which is a historical mansion built in 1891, continues to exhibit its historic value with regard not only its massive scale, but also the fine detail found in the stunning aesthetic detail throughout the national historic monument. When planning your visit, please keep in mind that tours are offered every half-hour, Wednesday through Sunday.

Guides lead guests through four floors of the 1891 house, providing a glimpse into life in a 19th century mansion, the impact James J. Hill had on the economic transformation of this region, and the social system that continues to be studied in schools across the country today.

Decorative components such as chandeliers, stained glass and hand-carved woodwork are just a few notable qualities of the 36,000 square foot home. Along with these aesthetic aspects underlining the wealth of the mansion, this luxurious home also features original mechanical systems that provided heat, light, water, ventilation and security.
