James Fenimore Cooper's Influence On Jane Austin

In the mid to late 1700s, William Cooper and Elizabeth Fenimore married and had twelve children, James Fenimore Cooper being the eleventh child born into the family. James was born on September 15 in 1789 in New Jersey, but shortly after he was born, He and his family moved from New Jersey to New York because of his father’s work. William Cooper was a federalist congressman which caused him to travel with his family from time to time. James received a good, rich education when he was young, and after he graduated, he attended Yale University from 1803-1805. But after his three years of college, he got expelled for pulling a prank in school. Joining the navy until 1809, he sailed the sea for the next portion of his life until he got married. After he wrote this book, many people thought that it was a run-off of one of Jane Austin’s work. The same problem arose after Cooper published The Spy; many people thought that it was the same principle as Sir Walter Scott’s book Waverly with the exception of the setting. James Cooper may have gotten some of his ideas for his books from other authors but all his books about the pioneer times or his times at sea were books based on his personal experience. The book The Pioneer closely resembled his childhood years when he moved from New Jersey to New York. James Fenimore Cooper died on September 14, the day before his sixty-second birthday. Although some may have thought that his first works were rewrites of other authors stories, his tales about Indians and adventures on the sea were original works because they were based on his real-life experiences throughout his growing up years.
