What was his childhood about? James Byron Dean is his full name. His childhood is about him and his family. He was the only child of Winton and Mildred Dean. Winton was a dental technician. He moved his family to Santa Monica, California, James was only six years old at that time. During his early years he was very fond of his mother. His mother, Mildred, had dreams of him being a big performer and enrolled him in tap dancing lessons and Violin lessons. Because James was very fond of his mother it hit him hard when she passed away of cancer in 1940. He graduated High School and went off to college in Santa Monica City College. He majored in pre-law, but had more interests in drama. Being interested in drama he transferred to the university of California, Los Angeles. While in LA he befriends an actor named James Whitmore, and no he did not like him because they had the same name he befriended him because he was interested in acting. By befriending him he obtained a small part of television drama. Awhile later he quit college and got a job as a parking lot attendant and participated in auditions whenever they were available. After searching for a while he landed a small part in Fixed Bayonets, a war picture. He left Holly wood to go to New York to be in that production. In New York he landed a spot in the actors studio that was run by Lee Strasberg. After hitting big in New York he took off to Broadway and developed a reputation for being talented but hard to work
