James Dashner's The Maze Runner

Decent Essays
The Maze Runner is a book which possesses a unique type of narration and holds the attention of anyone who reads it till the very end. The author, James Dashner, gives each and every character in the novel a different sort of attractive trait. The ominous point of view substantially covers every aspect of what’s going on in the novel.

The book isn’t just young—adult—post—apocalyptic science fiction; to me this book is a roller coaster of emotions and a constant pressure of the ongoing climax. This dystopian novel starts off with a young boy called Thomas who wakes up on an elevator box and has no idea of what’s going on. He wakes up to see Glade, a large area of land that’s closed by high concrete walls. What is he doing here? Why is he here?

Every hero goes through a journey cycle, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, et cetera et cetera. Each of these heroes’ journey cycle has an effect on the theme of their respective stories as well as helping to develop their plots. James Dashner’s novel, The Maze Runner, helps express this statement as Dashner utilizes the hero’s journey in order to introduce and develop the theme of his novel, while employing the hero’s journey in a way that helps form his plot in an intriguing way. James Dashner makes use of the hero’s journey cycle in his novel, “The Maze Runner”, to form key plot components including the exposition, the climax, and the resolution. In “The Maze Runner”, Dashner uses the departure stage of a hero’s journey cycle to create the exposition for his novel, starting by allowing readers to obtain the setting, the protagonist, and the internal conflict of the protagonist in his novel through the “beginning of the adventure”, a vital step in the departure stage of a hero’s journey cycle (Dashner Pgs. 1-3).…

When the main character, Thomas arrived to the Glade in a box, in a way he was being “born” into a different or new reality. He had no memories of his past, so he got to start his life anew. When we are born life itself is like the glade, we do not know what this place is initially, we do not get instructions on what to do once we get here, and we do not remember where we came from. We come into this world completely clueless and probably frightened, which were emotions that Thomas felt when he first entered the Glade. So, like Thomas, we explore our world and realize that everything on this earth was built by an unknown higher power.…

Thomas is one of the best examples of a dystopian protagonist because he questions and fights everything he presented with. As he is shown around the community and as he approaches the maze he is told he is not allowed to enter under any circumstance. This frustrates him as he wants to know what is beyond and why is he allowed and only the “runners” are given permission inside. He becomes absorbed by his restrictions in the community and asks why he is trapped in his position and why he can’t do what he wants. He believes that this system of having others pick his position is flawed and unfair.…

The Maze Runner is yet another one of Hollywood's attempts to turn a popular young-adult dystopian sci-fi book into a successful film franchise. These attempts haven't been incredibly successful-look at The Giver and Divergent-but The Maze Runner is a pleasant surprise. Thomas, played by Dylan O'Brien, wakes up in a metal box that goes to a fairly large area called the Glade. The Glade is surrounded by a large stone maze terrorized by strange creatures named Grievers. The other boys of the Glade have lived for three years in a peaceful society, trying to find a way out through the aforementioned maze.…
