James Castle: A Fictional Narrative

James Castle paced back and forth in his room. It seemed ironic that he was locked in his room. It felt as if he were in his own castle. James chuckled at the thought and softly smiled. He was pulled out of his thoughts with a loud BANG at the door which were followed by more just as loud knocks. “Castle, open this door right now or I swear to God!” Phil Stabile threatened. “I promise you this I will break down this door.” James slid a chair under the door knob and prayed that Phil wouldn’t try to break the door. He started to feel stuffy, so James opened the window. It seemed unfair that such a nice day was being ruined by Phil. Just for that, I’m not taking those words back.” Shouting with rage, Phil slammed into the door repeatedly. Due to James’s bed being so close to the door, he moved back into the windowsill. That was the furthest away he could get without jumping out of the window. James glanced down out of the window. He decided that if he needed to, he’d be able to make it. It wasn’t that far of a fall. If anything, he’s break a leg or something. He could recover from that quite easily. Then, he’d be remembered as a survivor from the fall and Phil’s wrath. James hadn’t expected this and fell off the windowsill. As he was falling he looked up at the sky. “I forgot to give Holden his turtleneck back,” James said right before his body connected with the

Merricat Blackwood is an unreliable narrator in We Have Always Lived in the Castle, based on many of her actions described throughout the story. Due to the unusual way she behaves, it is fair to question if she is capable of being a reliable narrator. In the beginning of the story, Merricat describes herself and her family. For instance, Merricat says, “I have often thought that with any luck at all I could have been born a werewolf, because the two middle fingers on both my hands are the same length, but I have had to be content with what I had. I dislike washing myself, and dogs, and noise.…

It called to me, pushed me to it’s bidding, begging me to enter. It probably hadn’t been the best idea to enter, in hindsight, I could have made a much better decision.…
