James Boswell was well known for writing The Life of Samuel Johnson. He made the way people think about biographies completely different because of the book he wrote about Samuel Johnson. Boswell revolutionized the writing of English authors forever.
Boswell’s life started on the 29 of October in Edinburgh, Scotland. (“James”) He was the son of advocate and Judge Alexander Boswell and mother Euphemia Erskine-Boswell. (“Element 582”) While Boswell was growing up he was expected to settle down in Scotland and carry on the law profession his family started. (“Element 582”) But Boswell had other plans. But most of the material he published died. (“BBC”) About 125 years later, most of Boswell’s papers were stored in various places such as an old croquet box and a loft over a stable until 1920 and 1949. (“BBC”) They were found and purchased from Boswell’s heirs and put it in the Yale University Library. Many of them have been published, so now we have more available firsthand written information on Boswell than on any other person living or dead. (“Element 582”) During his time Boswell had gained possession of the Auchinleck house that was previously his fathers. (“James”) He had also become the ninth laird of Auchinleck. He was elected the recorder of Carlisle in 1788. (“James”) He shortly resigned from the position in 1790. In 1769 Boswell married his first cousin Margaret Montgomerie. They together had five children named Alexander after his father, James after himself, Veronica, Euphemia after his mother, and Elizabeth. (“BBC”) But he also had two children that weren’t from this marriage with Margaret Montgomerie named Charles and Sally. They had a normal marriage until Boswell took the habits of drinking and fooling around with prostitutes. Despite these horrid things Boswell was doing behind Margaret’s back she surprisingly stayed with Boswell. To many people Boswell seemed normal but that was not how he really was all of the time. (“James”) Most of the time he was a good natured, passionate person but because of certain habits he was not a very good husband to his wife and father to his
