During the war, there was a man named, Joseph Favre Baldwin. He was born August 3, 1892, in Tyler, Texas. Baldwin attended Tulane Medical School and the Virginia Military Academy. Baldwin graduated in 1915 to enlist into the U.S. Army as a surgeon. On August 7, 1918, Baldwin was killed when an artillery shell hit him near the front lines in France.…
When he earned his degree in electrical engineering, Nathaniel Baldwin was no technology fanatic. In fact, he went on to BYU to teach physics and theology. But, as a kid, he was quite taken with technology and was “always building things”, (Singer 44). He actually built his own bike and steam engine, so he had an extremely well start. Sadly, Baldwin was fired from his BYU job, but it may have not been such a horrible thing after all.…
At one point in most everyone's life they dream of making a difference in their community. They want to make it a better place. This is one of many dreams that I wish to accomplish. My plan is to use this scholarship to help set a better example for the younger generation in my tribal community. My hope is that by attending college and bettering myself, then the youth within the tribe will follow my lead and decide to do the same; whether it be going to college one day or to just be a better person in general.…
Before I begin my essay, I would like to state that I am truly grateful of having the opportunity of joining the AP Capstone Scholars Program. To begin, I would like to join the AP Capstone Scholars Program because of the many benefits it offers. I know that the program will provide me with the essential knowledge and skills that I need to succeed further on into my future: and to be quite frank, that is important to me and why I care about this program. Growing up, I never was the kid to try hard.…
I am a child who is from a military family, who has dreamed of working with the Department of Defense (DOD) schools overseas, and I have been told to never give up on my dreams. Attending college to become a school psychologist has been a dream of mine. Receiving this scholarship would help me pursue my career with helping other military children cope with their parent or parents being deployed. Working as a school psychologist, I can personally relate to the emotions and struggles the kids are going through more than most people because I have been in their position. With the help of the Prairie Meadows Scholarship my dream of helping military children will come true.…
The story of James Baldwin– The Price of the Ticket is by a documentary is Karen Thorsen writer in the mid-twentieth century. James Baldwin who was black and homosexual. From a social point of view, he had at least the two challenges of being black and homosexual from which he might be thought of as in oppressed groups. Throughout his life Baldwin never married nor did he father any children. Instead, he used his time to write and become a prominent activist of his generation and for those that followed. He became a tireless public speaker and integrated his experiences into his novels (Werlock). Speaking for a sexual minority within a racial minority, Baldwin’s goal was equality for Americans of all colors and sexualities. He was “society’s outcast three-times over” (Verde).…
Frederick Douglass was born in February 1818 right into slavery. As a kid he went through a lot, eventually leading to two of his attempted escapes. He finally succeeded on his second attempt with the help of Anna Murray whom he had fallen in love with at the time. When he had grown up he became an abolitionist leader, and he supported women rights and equal rights to all human beings. He wrote many works talking about his experience being a slave.…
Having received the LAEF scholarship for the past 3 years has been a blessing for me and my family. The LAEF Scholarship means the world to me because it’s a constant reminder and symbol that there are good people in this world that care about my education and the education of others as well. Knowing that the LAEF foundation cares about my education as much as my parents do makes me want to excel in and out of school. I can say that the LAEF scholarship has impacted my educational experience because it has given me motivation, determination, and has also given me a chance to set a goal for myself. The LAEF scholarship pushes me and gives me the extra support I need to do well in all my classes since I am determined to get a 4.0 GPA.…
The knights of Columbus should consider me, Emily Rosales for this scholarship since my utmost aspiration is to follow the mission that God has given to me by helping my neighbors with dignity and respect. My mission began as an altar server when I received my first Holy Communion “The Body of Christ” at Holy Cross Catholic Church in 2009. Then as an usher which lasted for a year volunteered in the EDGE program for three years, and participated in the Vacation bible study for a week during summer in 2014. Currently, I am still an altar serving and Eucharistic Minister. In addition, I volunteered for a year at mesa public library, where I organized the books in the right place, I helped customers get their library card, helped kids and even…
I was raised by a single mom of four who doubles as my role model. She worked at least two jobs at a time to support me and my sister, who was three years older than me. She is what I think of when hard work comes to mind. My mother has always had high expectations for me, she's always wanted me to do well. Her constant motivation and encourgement, it has consequently rubbed off on me.…
During Summer 2014, I was accepted into the Prairie View A&M University Research Experience High School (REH) program. During this program, I worked closely with Dr. Branch-Vital and 2 of her graduate students to learn the process of conducting research. Upon the completion of the program, I completed a research poster titled: Examining Factors Contributing to BMI Among African American Freshman Students at a HBCU in a Rural Area. My experience in this program allowed me to get a broader understanding of the Kinesiology (then Human Performance) major. After I completed the program I began to fall in love with the major and ultimately the program made my decision to declare my major as Kinesiology.…
Noor Al-Maadeed “Being judged by others” this personal piece that I shared, describes a past event happened during high school years. I learned how to overcome this negative experience to positive thing that helped shape my character turn into the confident woman I am today. The process of revising this piece of writing is on of the hardest because it is difficult for me to express my feelings about a place that is filled with negativity. In addition, I want to catch the reader’s attention and make them engaged with the story.…
To do so, I propose creating a network of mentoring programs creating by the Ron Brown Scholar organization, that go out and bridge the gap between African American youth, and academic success. Many may argue this point by stating the old phrase “the road is wide but the path is narrow”, however, I cannot agree with the ideology when I know that students just like myself are given an half rate education just because of where they live, and the tax code that follows. I am first a child of God, and then I am a black man:I know the world of systemic racism that lies ahead for me and everyone with similar skin tones. So how can I sit back and let crony capitalist institutions like the SAT, and ACT which offer 9000 dollar test prep courses that guarantee high scores, prevent my people for excelling? In 2015 alone the average ACT score for black students was 17.1 compared to the national average of 21.…
I hope to one day give back to those who weren't as fortunate as I. With this being said, I can not complete my "five year goal" without financial help. My parents have two other (twin) children to take care of after me, they do not have the financial ability to pay a full time students college tuition, board, food plan, and books. I have personally made the decision to relieve my parents from paying my tuition, board, and books. It is my dream and goal to fulfill a higher education, not my parents. Thus, it is my job to pay for my own schooling.…
