I am Alexis V. Ojeda-Brown and I am a junior English and History double major with a minor in creative writing and a certificate in African American Studies at UMD. As an Afro-Latina at a PWI, I was trying to find my place on campus and I use to find myself choosing between my identities, as if they were both mutually exclusive. Once I realized that my Blackness was no less Black because of my brown identity and they were, in fact, inseparable, I was able to cultivate a better understanding of myself and a better understanding of Blackness in general. I am no less Black for being Peruvian and I am no more Black for being African-American. From salsa music to Trap music, from Tacu Tacu to Jollof, Black culture spans across the world and is different…

Conversations in the United States regarding racial inequality between blacks and whites are incredibly divisive. That is logical because one side must blame, while the other rebuts, and vice versa, until the discourse resentfully ends and no progress has been made. The chasm on opinions exists because whites are fundamentally incapable of understanding the plight of blacks unless they are well-educated. However, it’s difficult for whites to be well-educated, in context, given that the historical narrative being taught across the country is intentionally void of critical information regarding the black experience. Therefore, whites remain oblivious to the black struggle unless they either have intimate relationships with blacks who enlighten…

The New York Times released A Social Reflex: Police and Blacks, Seeing Threat, Close Ranks, written by Amanda Taub in light of the recent Black Lives Matter movement. It focuses on a theory called Intergroup Threat Theory, which essentially explains why the individual shootings of Black Americans is having such a large effect on the Black population across America. Researchers, John Dovidio from the Intergroup Relations Lab at Yale University and Kimberly Rios, a psychology professor from Ohio University, are leading the way in analyzing these group dynamics and responses (Taub, 2016). Dovidio has explained that our nature as social animals is driving these group divides. He said that when members of a specific social group feel threatened they close ranks with those they feel similar to.…

In response to the deaths of Mike Brown (27 August 2014) and Ferguson (09 August 2014), many protests emerged throughout the nation. “The police response to the uprising was intended to repress and punish the population, who had dared to defy their authority” (155). As the daily protests went on, the police brutality of Ferguson increased as a result of “frustration that they {police} could not make the Black men and women of Ferguson submit” (156). The Ferguson rebellion became the “focal point for the growing anger in Black communities across the country” (157). The young people of Ferguson experienced daily harassment.…

Just Walk On By My old English Teacher used to say, “Don’t assume things because you make an ass out of u and me.” The author, Brent Staples, gave his account of how what it is like to be a black man in this world of so-called equality. I agree with his statement our own race frightens us. Mass Media rubs it in our faces that Minorities are the leaders in gang violence, rapes, muggings, robbery, grand theft auto, and the majority of crimes in the cities and towns that either house us or are close by. “Negro bitterness bore down mainly onto other Negroes.”…

John Hope Franklin tells a story of something that happened when he was only seven years old in the story of “The Train from Hate”. It involves Franklin’s father which had moved to Tulsa to be able to support his family, while John, his mother, and his sister had still lived in Rentiesville Oklahoma. After researching more into the story I found that Charles Haskins, had done a lecture on Franklin, explaining Franklin’s father did not feel safe with his family being around the racial riots happening in Tulsa at the time. I myself grew up in a town with many racial issues. One of the middle schools I went to only had three white people, I being one of them.…

In society today there are several events that are taken seriously by the community, the government and the people. I am going to talk about how the “law enforcement” is handling African American males in regular/irregular situations. In beautiful Baltimore, Maryland on April 19, 2015 a 25-year-old black man died in police custody one week after being arrested. Freddie Gray’s death was ruled to be a homicide and the six officers who were involved had legal charges issued. The charges were not high enough for the people to be satisfied and this caused several protests following his funeral.…

My three identities are America’s worst fears. My identity is what prevents those who are closed-minded to sleep at night. Men disrespect me. Those who are privileged look down on me, and the racist fear I will bomb their “Land of the Free.” Kwame Anthony Appiah wrote his article “Racial Identities” explaining our different identities and how each of our “collective identities” makes up a script or narrative of shaping our life.…

According to Keith Gabriel in his essay “The Cynicism of Cops,” police officers view Black Lives Matter as an ongoing threat to the lives of police officers. As a movement, Black Lives Matter began as a response to a perceived bias toward African Americans on the part of police. The controversial shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, and the strangulation of Eric Garner in New York are the events that inspired Black Lives Matter. In his essay, Gabriel focuses on two former friends of his, both of whom are police officers, and he explains that he and his friends have drifted apart over the issue of Black Lives Matter. According to Gabriel, there are several reasons he and his friends drifted apart.…

It's 3 am and I can't even fall asleep. This is absolutely ridiculous and terrifying to see that this is the reality we live in today. Day after day, black men and women are being shot, choked and straight up brutalized and murdered and those are only among the ones we see on camera. This needs to stop. And yes, while other minority groups are also subject to discrimination and brutalization from the bad cops, the amount of black individuals that have been murdered and profiled within the past decade and farther that are undocumented is completely absurd.…

Before this course had initiated I measured myself as a person who was conscious of diversity and embraced the term. To my dismay I soon apprehended that I was not as open-minded as I had presumed that I was. Although, I had attended a multi-cultural school during my adolescent years that exposed me to different ethnicities. I had not developed a culturally competent way of thinking until I entered into Wayne State University’s School of Social Work program this fall. During my tenure at this diverse school I cultivated personal relationships with a multitude of people from different races, who possessed diverse beliefs and religions.…

But in most cases it’s evident that what these officers do, is not within their job description. Before some of us were born, the issue with Rodney King transpired. Some young people, like myself, hadn’t heard of this case before, so after doing extensive research I can say without exaggerating that I am utterly astonished and disgusted. You’d think that after choosing a topic like this, I’d understand more, but the truth is that we won’t ever get accustomed to the way police officers act sometimes. Allow me to give you a brief insight to what happened the night of March 3, 1991.…
