Did you know that there was a famous reggae singer named Bob Marley, backed by his group The Wailers. This is one of the cool facts you will learn in this paper. This paper will discuss Jamaica; it’s history, government and economy. people and culture, and its geography. The first topic will be about Jamaica’s history. Arawak Indians lived in Jamaica when Columbus explored it in 1494 and named it St. Lago. Later, Buccaneers traveled from Port Royal, also the capital at the time, until it fell into the sea in an earthquake in 1692. After many years of slaves, abolition of slave trade was in 1807 and the emancipation of slaves was in 1833.

The deviation of the Jamaican dollar made Jamaican products more competitive on the world market, and the country achieved record growth in tourism and agriculture. While manufacturing drew, food rose as much as 75% and thousands of Jamaicans fell deeper into poverty(Jamaica). The population below the poverty line in Jamaica is 16.5% as of 2009. Jamaica’s unemployment rate is 14%. Jamaica has the 150th largest unemployment rate in the world.
Everybody in Jamaica has citizenship when they are born.Jamaicans are dual citizens recognized when they are born and by descent. Jamaica’s suffrage is earned at eighteen years old (World Factbook).
To help with a big problem in Jamaica and the United States, Jamaica signed a “ship-rider agreement”, allowing the U.S. authorities to enter Jamaican waters and search vessels with Jamaican government permission in order to fight during drug trafficking. Later, Dozens of people died in the Tivoli Gardens section of Kingston in late May of 2010 in clashes between police and supporters of a drug lord, Christopher Coke, who was also wanted in the U.S. for charges on drug trafficking. About seventy-five Jamaican civilians were killed during the clashes between police and Christopher Coke supporters. Perkins says that Jamaica is most famous for ragged music that was born in the fifties and sixties from mento, rocksteady, and ska. A famous ragae singer was Bob Marley, backed by his group the Wailers. Other famous raged singers are Desmond Dekkar, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, and Burning Spears.
Jamaica has lots of interesting and unique geography. Jamaica was formed when North american and caribbean tectonic plates collided around twenty five million years ago. Jamaica is an island in the West Indies, ninety miles south of the island of Cuba (Jamaica). Jamaica is located in the Caribbean Sea (Perkin). Jamaica’s geographic coordinates are (18 15N, 77 30W) (World Factbook). Jamaica is about 600 miles south of Miami, Florida in the U.S. Jamaica is apart of a chain of islands called the Greater Antilles, including Cuba, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico (Perkin).
The area of Jamaica is a total of 10,991 sq. km. 10831 sq. km. of Jamaican area is land and 160 sq. km. is water. Jamaica’s land use is 41.4% agricultural, 11.1% arable land, 31.1% forest, and 27.5% is used for other things. Jamaica is the 168th largest country in the world (World Factbook).
