Jamaica is a Caribbean island nation, full of mountains, rainforests and reef lined beaches. Many of its resorts are clustered in vibrant Montego Bay, with its British colonial architecture, and Negril, renowned for diving and snorkeling. Jamaica is famed as the birthplace of reggae and its capital Kingston is home to the Bob Marley Museum, dedicated to the city’s most famous son. Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean. Approximately 4,213 square miles. 146 miles from east to west of the island and at its widest 51 miles from St. Ann’s Bay in the north to Portland Point in the south, lying 90 miles south of Cuba, which is 118 miles west of Haiti. The mountain range runs from east to west. The Blue Mountains, at the eastern end rise is 7,402 feet and Birch’s Hill at the western end is 1,809 feet high. Morning views from Blue Mountain Peak are spectacular. As the sun comes up you can see cuba, but since you are over a mile and a quarter above sea level the view is more often than not filled with low lying early mist. In many cases these beaches are actually public beaches, although the resorts try to control access to them. In addition you can explore over 50 public beaches around the island. The most famous being Negril and Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay. Most of the beaches in Jamaica have white sand, but on the sound coast a few have black sand. Jamaica Beaches are rated amongst the Caribbean’s and the world’s best beaches, and at the top of the list is Negril’s 7 mile beach, but there are many other excellent beaches in Jamaica.
