Jamaica is a Caribbean island state and a former British colony. The country is a member of the Commonwealth. The head of the state is British monarch, Queen Elizabeth. The capital of Jamaica is Kingston. There live about 3 million people in the country, and the official language is English. The beautiful country is mostly famous for their outstanding athletes, for example Usain Bolt, and for reggae music. There are also large Jamaican communities in the USA and the UK.
In 1517 West African slaves was brought to Jamaica. When the British made the island a British colony in 1655, many of these slaves escaped to the mountains. There they created their own life, these were called ‘ the maroons’. Late on the 1800s, in addition to sugar and rum, Jamaica started export of bananas too.
In the middle of the 1950s, more than 100 000 Jamaicans moved to the UK and the USA. Jamaica became independent 6th of August 1962, and joined the Commonwealth the same year. He was born 6th of February 1945, in Jamaica. He was married to Rita Marley, and he is father of 11 children. In 1963 he started a band with two others, called The Wailers. They became very popular in Jamaica, but not so popular in the rest of the world. Bob Marley did, he became the first popular artist from ‘the third world’. In 1980, he preformed in Zimbabwe for the celebration of the country’s independence. He has many famous songs in the world, one of them is ‘Could You Be Loved’. Bob Marley died of cancer in 1981. He’s the reason to why reggae music is a big part in today’s popular
