What is your opinion on the overall character of Jalil, Mariam’s father? What does his behaviour throughout this section of the novel tell you about the relationship he has with Mariam, and the relationship he desires to have with her? At the beginning of Khaled Hosseini’s, “A Thousand Splendid Suns,” we receive the impression that, Jalil, despite Nana’s bitter attitude towards him, is quite amiable. He makes sure to visit Mariam every week, and through the way he talks to her it is very clear that he truly cares and loves for her. However, after abandoning Mariam at their scheduled meeting and allowing her to sleep on the streets, Jalil appears to be a completely different person.
