In the film Avatar, Jake Sully is faced with multiple ethical dilemmas. Including taking his brothers spot on the mission, whether to help the soldiers destroy the Home-Tree and the decision to fight the humans and send them back to Earth. I would like to focus on the internal conflicts that Jake suffered when he decided that he wanted to protect the Home-Tree from Colonel Quaritch. When Jake Sully first came to the planet of Pandora he was absolutely focused on his mission of infiltrating the Na’vi and reporting back to Colonel Quaritch with any valuable information he learned. After living in the Home-Tree for a few months, falling in love with Neytiri and becoming a part of the Na’vi’s tribe, his fondness grew towards the culture and he

Over the course of the book, Jake befriends two characters in the story, Winston, a basset hound, and Destiny, a 4 year old boy. Destiny and Winston soon become attached to Jake, following him almost wherever he goes. However, this didn’t happen automatically, as Jake performed certain actions that made Winston and Destiny become his comrades. For example, when Jake didn’t wish to have the food that was being served, he gave the food to Winston so he could eat it, which was the first step to Winston becoming one of Jake’s companions. In addition, Jake fed Winston liver treats, which made Winston become even closer with Jake.…

In “The Sun Also Rises” Hemingway introduces his novel with two quotes. The first is a quote from Gertrude Stein, a painter, poet, who was at the center of the social scene of American expatriates in the 1920s Paris. She identifies that Hemingway’s is “lost generation.” This term characterizes the emotional, moral and in many cases physical emptiness of the post-WWI generation, that witnessed the bloodiest and deadliest times known to man, to this point in history. This “lost generation” sought comfort in the decadent, carefree times of the roaring 1920s where alcohol was at the epicenter.…

Also, these individuals will face dilemmas in their line of work that will make them question their morals. In Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden, the soldiers were required to kill certain individuals that they would typically never hurt. Alternatively, the soldiers trusted individuals that had previously tried to kill them, and they decide not kill these individuals since the soldiers did not want to harm innocent individuals, knowing that this may put them at risk.…

Books are like creamily iced tiered chocolate cakes: rich, layered, deep. Meanwhile, movies, especially when based on books, are more like lemon-glaze angel food cakes, delightful and pleasing, yet not necessarily as filling as their densely layered counterparts. Having savored both the story and movie of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, I have found the movie more palatable because of it’s sublime characterization of Emma Bloom, condensed yet quality plot, and impressive ending. The sugar necessary to quality cakes, Emma Bloom is an incredibly mysterious yet warm character, a young woman in her mid-teens with the “peculiarity” of control over air.…

Heather Ostman’s article “The Sun Also Rises” from the Encyclopedia of the American Novel begins with an explanation of the book’s title. The Sun also Rises gets its name from Ecclesiastes, which is also quoted at the beginning of the book along with a quote from Gertrude Stein about the Lost Generation. Ostman notes that the connection of Ecclesiastes hopefulness with Stein’s hopelessness sustain the feeling of meaninglessness and alienation of the characters of the book following the Great War. In The Sun Also Rises as well as other books from the time period, love seems to fail time and time again, as relationships cannot be sustained or produce children. Love seems futile in this era, Ostman points out in this work as well as in T. S. Eliot’s…

Morality is a particular system of values and principles of conduct held by one person or society. Each person has their own set of morals, and they can be influenced by things such as culture or other people. There is no universally right moral value system, and as far as morals go, there is no right or wrong. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, a man named Adolf Hitler persuaded the citizens of Germany that jewish people were a threat to their society. Morality is one’s sense of right and wrong, but it is not something one is born with. Rather it is something he or she could learn over time. People go through life learning morality from his/her family, friends and his/her own personal mistakes. However, in some cases morality is never taken into consideration when faced with decisions that may lead to life changing consequences. In the novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini argues that one’s social status affects his/her sense of right and wrong.…

In the novel “The Sun Also Rises” , written by Ernest Hemingway, two of the major characters, Jake Barnes and Robert Cohn, share certain similarities but are extremely different at the same time. Both characters are exceptionally prominent in the novel and greatly contribute to the excitement of the plot. Without these characters in the novel, the story would clearly not be as entertaining and would feel as though it is lacking something. Jake Barnes and Robert Cohn complete the story and help to keep the plot moving. Jake Barnes is the novel’s main character as well as narrator.…
