We know that Cohn will more than likely go back to Frances because he’s been filled with the toxic poison of Brett, that there’s no other way, but to refill yourself with someone that isn’t poisonousness—and, Frances was the one that loved him, in her own way. Bill was never having any troubles or issues, he was just Bill and he going to continue being Bill. Last we see Mike he was drunk and probably still is, we don’t know, but we do know he gets a happy ending with Brett. I’m not stating that this poisonousness is a bad thing, some of the best friendships are poisonousness and they seem to make it work—as though they say, nothing is perfect. Jake is the only one who was realistic in the story because we needed someone to keep us—as readers—in reality. We needed someone who knew that life was crap. He’s already been filled with the poison from the war, nothing could possibly happen to him that hasn’t been the worst already. Hemingway was conveying that realism comes with being an adult, and sometimes being an adult means putting up with toxic people because you have no one else. Not letting it consume you, like Jake doesn’t, but simply just hanging out with people who you have something in common
