At first he started with the basics of math such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Escalante believed that students should not be taught at the lowest levels, he thought that the students should be challenged. Then he progressed with a few students and started to teach them algebra. By 1979, he started teaching his first calculus class. He also gave them encouragement and taught them not to give up on themselves. In attempt to make students pay attention, he wore funny hats and brought different materials to school to teach his students math. He also decorated his class room with inspirational quotes and posters to get his students attention and his attempts worked. He gained the classes respect and the few students that joined the class passed the Advanced Placement (AP) exam. This exam is a very difficult exam that most high school students do not attempt. This inspired Escalante to search for more students to teach. For the students in the class that were struggling, he helped before school and during their lunch period. He also had after school and Saturday

Esperanza’s childhood mirrors Cisneros’ in the aspect that were both encouraged by their mothers to read and were not insisted on spending all their time performing classic “women’s work”. Equality is something that is perpetually strived for, but seldom achieved. In the novella The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the protagonist, Esperanza, does not want to continue the cycle of inequality. Throughout the story, Esperanza continually sees women in her life treated like objects in a society that values women for their looks, and not for what is on the inside. In the thread of gender roles, a theme that is developed is that men do not treat women as their equals, but instead as something that can be possessed and dominated. This theme is developed throughout the stories Esperanza tells about her great-grandmother’s resentment of being a married woman, Rafaela’s lack of freedom in her marriage, and the troubles Minerva…

The environment is rough since it is deeply impoverished and many of the teenagers resort to gangs life and other deviant behaviors for lack of alternatives. A new teacher was hired to teach computer science, but he soon found out that the computers were never purchased due to budget constraints so he would be teaching math instead. After school, he finds that his car had been broken into and his stereo stolen. The schools in these types of areas are crime ridden and lacking in all levels of academics due to the sparsity of good teachers willing to work in them, this is evident in the movie from the apathy expressed by the administrator named Raquel Ortega who has little confidence in the student’s ability to rise to the expectations of Escalante. In a scene of Jaime taking the trash out at home, we learn that he had quit his prestigious job as a computer engineer to become a teacher which proved that he was committed to being a teacher regardless of the self-sacrifices.…
