Jailine’s Writing Grade

In regards to Eric Viets writing class. I. Jailine Estrella, absolutely, without a doubt, positively deserve an A or better yet a A+.

Like many of my classmates, we want to receive the best possible score on the work we have presented in class. However the reason I deserve an A in this class is because, I as a writer and student have shown growth and strength as a writer, professionalism, and overall achievement in the class. With my writing pieces I have shown in how I have moved into college readiness writing. And we all know, college=success=MONEY.

When looking at my CBM scores much growth is shown. Starting off in the hundreds zone, I have made sure to increase my writing fluency by increasing to the two

I made sure to explore divergent and interesting genres to revolve my pieces about. My pieces not only show growth as a writer but my experience through my first semester as a highschool senior. Starting off with a fun at easy genre of a recipe, It reflected on me entering the new year, semi laid back. I moved up to creating websites, this piece reflected on me transitioning to becoming more serious in my work. Although this piece being a satirical and silly piece, I wanted to take a platform in where I spent most of my time finding help and research for my school work looking at hundreds of boring websites and turn it into my own fun piece. Now taking a step further in applying to colleges and universities, with all the stress that came with that process, I wanted to create my own college in where it contained everything I wanted to see in a school. With this piece I learned more about looking at multiple mentor texts and trying to match the genre as much as I could. Making multiple writing drafts of this, and having the most feedback, this piece really pushed me as a writer. Finally, the essay. This piece although contradicting my previous statement of not wanting to do generic pieces, this piece help me prove to myself that I was capable of writing college ready essays. This piece being apart of two classes, my AP English and writing, this was my longest piece, showing growth in word count, but also being able to properly form opinions and back them up with evidence. Having two classes to work on this, really allowed me to dive deep with this piece and receive a lot of feedback and

On November 1, 2016, you were assigned a project to make minor revisions to Standard Procedure 001:48:1, Disposition of Authority Property. Following the assignment of the project, you were instructed by me to: • Correct language errors, if any, in the published document On November 18, 2016, you submitted a draft procedure to me with the language error corrections you were recommending. The approximately 15 one-word recommendations you made included the following errors: • “Maintains an inventory of stored furnitures for use in Central Office (CO) locations.” • Coordinates the transfer and disposal of office furnitures at CO locations only. (In both cases above, you added an “s” to furniture even though the word furniture is an uncountable noun.)…

    Causing Grade Disputes

In the article, “Student Expectations Seen as Causing Grade Disputes,” studies outline a troubling trend in the minds of America’s youth: Students deserve high marks just for fulfilling rudimentary requests. While this concept seems to be present in most teens’ minds, many others hold a different view. In the Patrick Henry AP English Language and Composition Syllabus, this idea is explicated with clarity: “The grade of A is a performance grade, not an effort grade.” In this class, neither attending live seminars nor relying on prior knowledge is enough to obtain an extraordinary score.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

This semester I have learned a great deal from Professor Beach, especially in regards to argumentative essays. He has taught how to get the proper evidence, facts, and to stay on point and remain focused. But most importantly he has taught me that argumentative essays must have a valid argument. Before I took Professor Beach’s course, when I saw commercials, advertisements, or the news, I would believe them without doing the proper research. Beach has taught me to see whether or not people are actually telling the truth or using fallacies.…

The main reason for this grade is a lack of any major improvement in writing. Although I had some improvements in writing (vocabulary, syntax, and tone), and developed a more complex style, there was not much improvement in the quality of writing this year from writing last year. I plan on not repeating my mistakes for next year’s English. Finally, I will talk about my main goals that I have completed and will complete.…

I have also learned and demonstrated that I am capable of producing well written papers and essays In the past four years the areas of writing that I have been the most successful in are essays because I can quickly write on the topic, then compared to my ability to write with nothing to start off of. But over the past four years my ability has significantly increased, I have gone from starting sentences with the same word consistently, and making punctuation errors to making very few. I also had errors in my citations, explanations, and the amount of times that…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Introductory Guide In the first work of my choosing, I describe my "Campus Connections," a written assessment of a campus activity that I chose to participate in and then write about. While I felt that my first draft of this essay was good, it came to my attention that I was missing the "wow factor" that would draw the reader in to my story. Using the peer reviews of my class, I revised my final draft into the following paper. I then took notes on my teacher's requirements of what the paper should look like.…

My History As A Writer Throughout my lifetime I have come to love and absolutely hate writing. The reasoning of the assignment or topic has a lot to do with my affinity and disgust. Although learning new things, like writing, was something that I loved doing in elementary school, that all changed when it was daily implemented. As an art form I recently come to love writing down my thoughts, ideas, opinions and stories.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…

As the semester is coming to a close, it is only appropriate to reflect upon my first semester of college. I may not attend a highly prestigious university, however attending a community college still allows me to continue my education. I come from a school where our English department was not the best, but thanks to my persistence and hard work I managed to secure a spot in the International Baccalaureate Program, a program that excels in developing students in all subjects. That being said, English has never been my strongest subject, often times I struggled with my writing throughout high-school. For the most part, most of my papers were deemed to be below college level, a fact that has always puzzled me.…
