“The goal of JAS is to assist inmates with mental health problems to obtain treatment and social support services in the community upon release from jail” (Jail Psychaitric Services, n.d). JAS seeks to extend the continuum of care for these individuals by providing intensive case management as well as initiating therapeutic contacts for individuals who do not have established resources in the community mental health system (Jail Psychaitric Services, n.d). The idea is to reach out to a special population of the mentally ill inmate suffering from dual offenses as results of concurrent substance abuse problems. This population is normally lacking strong community connection, familial support, and beneficial resources (Clements, Althouse, Ax, Magaletta, Fagan, & Wormith, 2007).
