On Friday, November 4, 2015, I got the opportunity to visit the Montgomery County correctional facility that is located in Boyd’s Maryland. Before, I went to the jail; I had a bad impression of the correctional system and offenders as well. I thought nothing good came out of being locked up in jail. After the tour, I have come to realize that the correctional center offers a much valuable variety of services to the inmates. I also got the understanding that detainees are not criminals, but they are individuals who made a wrong choice. During the tour, the officer who guided us through the tour explained that the jail is responsible for the custody of male and female’s inmate who have been sentenced to eighteen months or less …show more content…
They had a solitary confinement where inmates who were more violent and were a threat to other inmates were held; they had little chance to communicate with others and special opportunities such as family visitation were seized. Inmates, who are less aggressive, were separated in a different unit. Apart from being locked up in their rooms for several hours inmates had the chance to spend almost 3 hours outside their cells where they had the chance to socialize with other inmate and also place a phone call to their families.
In other for the detainees, to feel productive and safe while they were being incarcerated, the Montgomery County Correctional facility has introduced and designed several effective programs for an inmate to partake to make their stay useful as well as managing their time wisely. Upon their arrival, inmates are assigned to a case manager who is there to guide them through the programs that were offered to inmates and counsel them in case they had any challenges they were facing. There were officers placed almost everywhere in the jail, visitors and staffs were searched and detected by a detector before they were allowed to enter the facility. There was the surveillance camera almost everywhere, which discover what goes into the jail day in and out. Each warden seems responsible very serious during their duties. Overall, visiting the Montgomery County corrections center was an eye opener for me, it has taught me to understand how the corrections system operates. Also, I have to realize that being incarcerated in jail is not all about locking people up, or repressing but rather it has more advantages and offers help to
