Growing up I didn’t necessarily have the best bilingual education experience but I did not let that stop me from pursuing my education to become at bilingual educator. I have seen that with the right people and the right tools in the classroom, bilingual education can go a far way. I have seen that being bilingual education has its many benefits that help students be more confident on who they are as a person and who they are culturally. BESO has helped me network and help me grow confidence when it came to networking with scholar professionals at conferences such as NABE. There have been studies that show that first-generation college students have low percentages in school involvement and BESO is definitely helping with making a change in that, by stimulating students to get involved. BESO has helped me get involved around campus which is fairly new for me for the reason that I was never encouraged to do so ever in any other organization I have tried to be part of. With BESO, I have had the great opportunity to volunteer at many National conferences (NABE, National Latino Children’s Literature Conference) at the Ronald McDonald House of Charities and the DoSeum. This has given me the opportunity to help out in the community, as we want to encourage community involvement because as future educators we know it’s important. Rodriguez grew up in a Spanish speaking family thriving and eager to expand his education and vocabulary in the “loud, booming with confidence” English language. Jeff Bale’s, a language education professor at Michigan State University, article, “Bilingual Education is the Best Approach for English Language Learners” also explains why this type of education is effective for foreign students. Together, both of these authors provide an effective argument with the use of reasoning, credibility, and emotion, but also include logical fallacies. Jost’s and Bale’s…

Frederick Douglass once said “It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.” This means that difficult circumstances are needed to become better versions of ourselves. As someone who overcame the difficulty of balancing academics, athletics, and involvement with clubs and organizations on campus, I personally agree with this statement. Based upon the qualities I developed during these difficult circumstances, Frederick Douglass would believe I’m deserving of a scholarship bearing his name.…

Richard Rodriguez in his is personal narrative “Aria” gives the reader his perspective of learning English while being a native Spanish speaker. As a child he attended a monolingual school. He was told that by not speaking Spanish at home he would be able to quickly develop his English. Rodriguez attributes much of his success in life to this event of learning English, which is why he is against bilingual education. “The Pros of Bilingual Education” by Stephen Krashen challenges Rodriguez’s stance by stating the positive impact that bilingual education has on students, and how bilingual education gives students an educational advantage compared to those without it.…

There is an argument with the complexity of bilingualism and biculturalism. This situation is especially dealt with children. Why categorize a child because of their ability to communicate in two languages? Instead, why not understand the importance of diversity of the languages and let the child express him or herself. Self-identity is something that is gained with experience.…

Oftentimes, people who speak more than one language are seen as intelligent and resourceful. They may receive comments such as, “Wow, that’s so difficult! I could never do that!” But to bilingual individuals, the ability to speak two languages is barely scraping the bottom of the barrel. Two bilingual authors by the names of Martín Espada and Richard Rodriguez have plenty to say about their definition of what bilingualism truly is.…

Bialystok herself demonstrates that bilingualism provides constructive consequences. This does not wear out, rather it follows you in to the old age if we take part in mental training. This can range anywhere from reading in the target language to code mixing so that you are in daily contact with both languages. Bilinguals are mental jugglers that are constantly being tested, by providing constant stimulations for the mind/brain to keep busy and keep it healthy.
