Jaclyn Melicharek's Four-Day School Week

Should school districts change a five-day week policy to a four-day week policy? That question is debatable. Jaclyn Melicharek is the author of, "Four-day School Weeks: The Rule to Skip School" she writes about, her opinion on the matter if school days should be longer or shorter and the benefits and disadvantages it will have upon the students. She believes "Changing to a four-day school week is not beneficial"(Melicharek 96). She feels that it will, "Lower academic performances, hinder the quality of education for young students, and affect the lives of school faculty, staff, and parents"(Melicharek 96). I agree with Jaclyn that changing to a four-day school week is a bad idea. I feel it will cause the students physical, mental, and emotional pain, it will also cause parents many problems, and stop students from learning efficiently.
Many students go through high school with little to no worries, and

"Studies demonstrate the strong positive correlation between time spent in school and academic excellence; four-day school weeks would hinder learning gains"(Melicharek 97). This means that students who have more instructional time, will have the ability to understand what they are learning but, without this, it will cause students to suffer academically in a tremendous way. This can hinder you from scoring well on the future test.
For an example, I am a learner who understands things better when explained in detail face to face. If I didn’t get that face to face detailed experience, I wouldn’t know what I was doing in whatever subject I was studying when I got home. In other words, this means that if students have less instructional time than teachers would switch to different topics faster. Although some students can keep up with the teaching of different topics so quickly, others won't learn anything because they have different ways of how they

This shows that the school system should not allow a four day week because most kids can't focus for the 76 minutes in class, school days would be much longer, and teachers along with students wouldn't have anything to do after the school activities are finished. First and foremost, most kids can't even focus for the 76 minutes in class now. According to the article What Is The Effect a Four-Day School Week Has on Teachers and Students? Brian D. Hadfield states that "The lost day, spread out over the week results in about 20-30 extra minutes per class period." So, kids are going to have to sit through a 96 minute class period.…

I believe a four-day school week is a good idea. It will benefit students and teachers in many ways. There is a lot of stress in schools sometimes. We all need a peace of mind, I know I do sometimes. Sometimes, teachers could really use a peace of mind also, maybe they wouldn't yell so much.…

Have you ever walked into school on the first day of the year, or back from a long break, and realized you don’t remember anything you learned? Many students, myself included, experience this problem often. Most teenagers spend their breaks from school watching television, playing video games, and doing pretty much anything that isn’t studying or school related, causing them to forget most of what they learned at school. One solution to this problem would be to have students attend school year-round with various, shorter breaks throughout the year. Students should attend school year round because they could be taught more information, their grades could improve, and it keeps them on a routine.…

The week would be changed to four days long and it will go until five o' clock, so that way the students can learn more each day and get small break intervals. The weekend would be one day longer, but it is not long enough to make the student feel that they are just suddenly pushed into school, and not short enough so that they feel overworked. Longer school days will also allow longer classes to teach so the students can understand the material. Weekends can be a small break so that the kids can plan out the upcoming week, or prepare for the quizzes or tests for that…

A four-day school would be beneficial to students because this would cause less stress and another day of rest. It would help students to relax but at the same time make them stay active. They would want to do activities outside of school like just going outside with friends to play or get some sun. Some may abuse their extra day as a lazy day which is not what a four-day week is supposed to be for. Extracurricular activities practices could be on the extra day off.…

Each school day should be longer because it would benefit decisions made upon career choices of the youth. “Less than half of Americans- 46 percent- finish college” (“Statistics- The Education Crisis”). I think that they should stop having five days of school a week. I think they should change it and we should only have four days of school a week. There are some schools out west that only have four days of school a week and we could just add an hour of school to each day so that we could make up for that day that we will miss. It would be way better because then people would have more time during the day to do work because of the extra hour and they would also have a longer weekend that if they had homework they could do it during the extra day. We could just go to school Monday through Thursday and have Friday off, plus that way we could have our Varsity football games on a day off from school.…

If the schools did four day weeks then the students would be in school too long during the day. By making a longer school day the administrators would make it so that the students would have a break in the morning and a possibility of having a longer lunch. By giving these breaks that takes at least an hour off of the two hours they were planning for. This leaves about six or seven minutes for each class. Which is good for seat time, but that is one less lecture during the week that the teachers and students are missing, this puts the students behind academically.…
