His current strategies for seeing a spider are to avoid the spider and to tell an adult, he at times gets too panicked and is unable to tell the adult what is wrong and tends to frighten the other children in class. As obvious and rational as it might now be, the act of washing hands to prevent infections wasn’t so apparent up until the late 1800s. Back when doctors and medical students would move from dissecting a corpse straight to performing surgery on a patient, what is now known as infectious diseases were attributed to various reasons, and as every human being is in someway distinct from others, it was suggested that the cause of every death was too (Semmelweis seal., n.d.). In the 1840’s, and due to an increasing rate of puerperal fever (also known as childbed fever) amongst new mothers, which is a condition that occurs when a woman experiences an infection related to giving birth (Ataman A., n.d.). A Hungarian doctor named Ignaz Semmelweis discovered that mortalities from puerperal fever can be remarkably reduced by the simple act of washing hands.…

Not washing your hands after going to the bathroom is my biggest pet peeve! Public bathrooms have thousands of germs all around, especially in the stall. It is extremely unsanitary and can take a negative impact on a person’s health to not wash away germs. By washing I mean using soap, not just water because the bubbles in the soap are what trap the germs for them to wash away. One time in the 3rd grade I did not wash my hands for about a week and a half because I wanted to see what would happen, and sure enough I got the flu.…

The psychologist that he went to for many years claimed he had high levels of anxiety because of his fear for vomiting which would cause him anxiety whenever he got nervous, forming a constant cycle; which is known as catastrophizing from what I learned in class recently. After attempting to over come her phobia of vomiting with the exposure effect, she began to think it was something underlying within his childhood that may have caused his disorders. Scott had mentioned that his mother suffered from just about the same issues as Scott did, one being anxiety amongst others during her childhood years. In comparison, the study above showed that participants who experienced childhood separation and anxiety were correlated with higher rates of anxiety levels during adulthood than those of healthy participants. In contrast, there was no correlation that the anxiety and separation his mother may have experienced as a child caused her phobias to arise within her.…

Burnett argues that fear is important in terms of evolution (e.g., the fight or flight response) and escaping predator, but that phobias in modern times are irrational and based on the brain making connections that are not there and that these contribute to superstitions and conspiracies (apophenia). Phobias are extreme and debilitating fears, that might result in a physiological arousal (Phobias NHS Choices, 2016).Researchers and the author claim that fear can be learned. Andreas, Nearing, and Phelps (2007) argue that first-hand experience is not necessary for learned fear since it can be acquired by observing others. Likewise, Burnett suggests that parents have an influence on their children’s perceptions of fear. The author goes on to say that those with irrational beliefs (e.g., phobias, supernatural and conspiracies theories) have less brain activity in comparison sceptics.…
