Hospitals are made to help those who are ill or injured and they have saved millions of lives. That does not mean they are without flaws. The billboard that Jackson South Community Hospital put up promoting a weight loss surgery is an example of one of these flaws. If a hospital goal is to improve the overall health of a population, then you would think they would allocate their resources to things that pose a greater threat to public health such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. An argument Jackson South can make is that being overweight puts you at a higher risk for those threat stated above, but weight loss surgery is not the only option obese people have to lose weight.
