Should Dance Be a Flex Credit at Jackson High School?
Dance is well known to millions across the world as moving in a different your body in a different way than your body would normally. Yes, dance is moving your body in a unique way, but dance also takes strength, stamina, and flexibility.
In order to qualify as a flex credit in the state of Ohio the student must benefit or build self-esteem, personal health, motor skills, and knowledge. This requirement has been in effect for years and sports like softball, track, lacrosse, tennis, golf, and even bowling are is enforced as sports. However, dance does not meet the requirements.
At Jackson High School the periods are forty-seven minutes long and dancers are given two minutes to change before and after the bell, making the class forty-three minutes long. All levels of dance have jazz, tap, and ballet, then starting at levels two there is modern, levels three and up also offer lyrical. As a dancer, I have put in numerous hours inside and the outside of school. I have learned that dance is not easy and many underestimate the ability that dancers have. With all the classes students take inside of Jackson School for the Arts (JSA), it is hard to fit in something like a gym. We are taking rigorous classes with homework that can take up to hours each night. It would be difficult to be involved in a sport when you have already spent almost an hour dancing earlier in the day. On conditioning days students come out sweating and out of breathe because the class was challenging physically.
Dancers don’t only learn technique week after week. We become familiar with the words, and they become engraved in our brains. We have performance quizzes, and vocab quizzes to test our knowledge of the styles we are
